The Foundation for California Community Colleges is on a mission to double its impact in the next 10 years. We are a group of relentless optimists and innovators in education, working collaboratively with public and private partners to help improve the student experience and expand pathways to economic and social mobility in communities across California. We are seeking a Product Design Specialist to join the Foundation in its mission of benefitting, supporting, and enhancing the California Community Colleges—the largest and most diverse system of higher education in the nation.

In 2017, the California Community Colleges committed to the philosophy to “always design and decide with the student in mind.” Shortly after, the Foundation for California Community Colleges and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office secured philanthropic funding to create the Student Centered Design Lab, the nation’s first lab dedicated to improving the community college student experience.

What You’ll Do
The Product Design Specialist will join the Student Centered Design Lab, a small but growing team housed in the Foundation’s Incubation Unit. The Student Centered Design Lab team applies design thinking, user experience (UX) frameworks, and market research methodologies to increase students’ access to and success within higher education.


What you bring

  • Translate complex concepts and project, system, and technical requirements into strategic, user-friendly, and intuitive solutions through the creation of personas, user journey maps, sketches, low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes, prototypes, user flows, and more. 
  • Drive the development of user experience frameworks that articulate the product value proposition and inform product roadmaps.
  • Support research planning, lead project implementation, and lead evaluation of product usability and performance to identify student expectations, unmet needs, and gaps in the current experience.
  • Leverage user insights to define requirements needed to drive functional specifications and technical requirements.
  • Adhere to existing font, color, imagery style, and other brand standards and co-lead the development of Lab style.
  • Proactively identify and troubleshoot existing and potential UI/UX issues within existing or new projects, including adherence to WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility guidelines.
  • Facilitate meetings with clients and partners to effectively implement projects.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring project artifacts are complete, current, and retained appropriately.

 

Ideal Candidate Qualities

  • Relevant BA/BS, equivalent work experience, or a combination of both
  • Relevant advanced degrees or certificates in Psychology, UX/Human Factors, Marketing, or Computer Science a plus 
  • Minimum of three (3) + years of related work experience (specifically, User Experience (UX) Research, Information Architecture, Interaction Design, Visual Design) and a portfolio demonstrating relevant client work experience
  • Minimum of three (3) + years of experience building user experiences that conform with WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility guidelines 
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and other standard office software and equipment required
  • Ability to manage by influence and ability to build and maintain credibility
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, develop solutions, implement, and assess outcomes
  • Excellent organization and problem-solving skills and ability to think strategically to achieve goals
  • Excellent presentation skills, with an ability to present technical information and processes in an easy-to-understand way
  • Ability to develop a deep understanding of our organization to work across business and technical teams, and across organizations both internally and externally
  • Ability to work independently, managing assigned project tasks/timelines with minimal supervision 
  • Passionate about providing students with stronger pathways to education and building a more just and equitable California overall
  • A self-starter and quick learner who is highly motivated and outcome-oriented, always seeking innovative approaches to project execution
  • A strategic and creative thinker who can problem-solve, working within and across teams to swiftly respond to needs identified across the California Community Colleges
  • Practices ownership, takes accountability, and able to project manage, prioritize tasks, and deliver quality products on time with limited supervision
  • Ability to work on a fast-paced team and build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
