Description

The Foundation for California Community Colleges is on a mission to double its impact in the next 10 years. We are a group of relentless optimists and innovators in education, working collaboratively with public and private partners to help improve the student experience and expand pathways to economic and social mobility in communities across California. We are seeking a Senior Specialist to join the Foundation in its mission of benefitting, supporting, and enhancing the California Community Colleges—the largest and most diverse system of higher education in the nation.

What You’ll Do
The Senior Specialist will guide CCC staff, faculty, foster youth liaisons, and Student Ambassadors in understanding public benefits programs by developing and providing access to student-centered collateral, resources, and trainings. The Senior Specialist will be responsible for digging deeply into eligibility criteria for public benefits programs and developing digestible materials that colleges can use to assist transition-age foster youth and other students in applying for and accessing public benefits programs to address students’ basic needs, such as CalFresh, CalFresh Employment and Training, CalWORKS, Medi-Cal, Earned Income Tax Credit, and transitional housing. The Senior Specialist will also investigate other public benefits programs for which transition-age foster youth and CCC students are eligible, such as childcare subsidies, county based mental health services, and in-home visitation programs for new moms.

What you bring

  • Work collaboratively with team members to develop, lead, and support the Public Benefits for Foster Youth project grant deliverables and initiatives.
  • Track legislation and policies relevant to public benefits and financial aid, particularly for foster youth students, and disseminate information statewide about any changes and resources to support implementation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the Equity department and Foundation surrounding public benefits for foster youth students by sharing expertise for new projects, stepping into meetings with high visibility partners and presenting to stakeholder groups.
  • Develop and retain key stakeholder relationships including program partners and funders to advocate for the basic needs of foster youth students in the California Community Colleges.
  • Contribute to Chancellor’s Office larger basic needs initiatives, including participation in basic needs task force as requested.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to increase awareness, knowledge, and capacities of college staff to support foster youth students in applying for and receiving public benefits for which they are eligible. This includes providing technical assistance and support statewide through facilitating regional calls with the colleges, identifying, and sharing best practices, and creating connections to other partners and resources.

Ideal Candidate Qualities

  • Relevant BA/BS, equivalent work experience, or a combination of both
  • Minimum of five (5) + years of professional work experience with demonstrated success
  • Minimum of five (5) + years of progressive experience in local, regional, or statewide program development and implementation
  • Minimum of two (2) + years of experience in an education or non-profit environment
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with a large number of stakeholders
  • Knowledge of public benefits available for students such as CalFresh, CalWORKS, Medi-Cal, and financial aid
  • Knowledge of basic needs challenges for current or former foster youth students
  • Strong project management: ability to prioritize tasks, efficiently manage timelines, and effectively execute projects with limited supervision and according to established deadlines.
  • Ability to solve practical problems quickly and effectively
  • Ability to adapt to quick-changing circumstances while maintaining goal-orientation
  • Passionate about providing students with stronger pathways to education and building a more just and equitable California overall
  • A self-starter and quick learner who is highly motivated and outcome-oriented, always seeking innovative approaches to project execution
  • A strategic and creative thinker who can problem-solve, working within and across teams to swiftly respond to needs identified across the California Community Colleges
  • Practices ownership, takes accountability, and able to project manage, prioritize tasks, and deliver quality products on time with limited supervision
  • Ability to work on a fast-paced team and build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
