Since 1996, SAJE has been a force for economic justice in the community focusing on tenants’ rights, healthy housing, and equitable development. 
The mission at Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE) is to build community leadership and power for economic justice. We do this by providing tenants with the tools to advocate for themselves and their neighbors. We also develop policies with tenants that help secure healthy, safe, and affordable housing for all community residents.

SAJE is searching for an Assistant Director who will coordinate our organizing, advocacy, policy and coalition building efforts to advance decommodified housing through forms such as community-controlled housing, social housing, housing cooperatives and more. This is a full-time non-exempt position funded for 12 months, with the possibility of extension pending additional funding. The Assistant Director will report to the Deputy Director of Policy and Research.

We are looking for an individual eager to help further SAJE’s mission and advance housing as a human right. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Facilitating strategic campaign efforts internal to SAJE and with external partners
  • Outreach to existing and potential partners in order to build coalition for decommodified housing
  • Coordinating events designed to build the network and momentum for decommodified housing
  • Engaging resident leaders based with coalition partners or independently to advance organizing and advocacy objectives
  • Supporting public narrative change work through research, message development, and content creation
  • Assisting in research by using internet resources and communicating with public officials and other entities 
  • Drafting policy memos
  • Other duties, as assigned


An ideal candidate would have the following qualifications: 

  • 5 years of experience working in housing justice, community organizing and/or social justice advocacy
  • Deep understanding of social movements in Los Angeles
  • Knowledge of housing policy, economic policy, history and geography of cities, or urban planning
  • Experience building partnerships and coalitions
  • Understanding of the importance and nature of strategic planning in advocacy campaigns
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Acute attention to detail, positive work ethic, strong initiative, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a group
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently
  • Strong interest in media, economic justice advocacy and community organizing
  • Strong commitment to the mission of SAJE. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work product
  • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and carry heavy weights
  • Reliable transportation
  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Bilingual in Spanish or other languages spoken locally a PLUS.


Starting salary is $60,000 and varies depending on experience. 
Medical, dental and vision insurance covered, a 403b retirement plan, paid holidays, vacation and sick time.

This position will be located in our South Central LA office, but will be working from home while we observe safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
