Young Storytellers sparks creative self-discovery through storytelling. Our programs highlight young people as the center of their own narratives, emphasize that their stories matter, and celebrate their unique voices as the ones telling them. Young Storytellers works towards a future where young people experience the impact that their thoughts, feelings, and words can have on the world in which they live.
Young Storytellers works with students in elementary, middle, and high school. In elementary school, students write scripts that are completely their own; in middle school, students write monologues about challenges they face; and in high school, students write Public Service Announcements that address important issues in their self-identified communities. Students in each program work with volunteer mentors, and every student gets to see their work performed by professional actors. Young Storytellers programs are designed around Common Core standards, integrate Social and Emotional Learning activities, and include components of Teaching Tolerance’s Social Justice Standards.
Development and Database Intern:
The Development and Database Intern works with Young Storytellers staff to execute a wide range of tasks, from database uploads to inputting weekly student, donor, and volunteer information to providing content and social media support. The Development and Database Intern helps to build out the operations and development side of the organization by keeping all of the information in our custom database up-to-date for our team’s use, and they are excited to help tell the story of our volunteer, donor, and student engagement through data. As is true at any non-profit, Young Storytellers is a dynamic environment where flexibility, humor, and openness are integral to our success (especially during a global pandemic).
Program Support Intern:
The Program Support Intern is integral to Young Storytellers’ success in the virtual space. The Program Support Intern, or as we fondly call them, the Zoomtern, is the reason our virtual programs can be successful. Acting as a support to our lead volunteers (Head Mentors) the Zoomtern is present at the first program sessions to ensure that virtual program space is set up properly and that students are in attendance. The Zoomtern works closely with the School Partners Specialist and Program Support Specialist to communicate essential information to students and their families or guardians, ensuring that they have everything that they need to be active and engaged participants in our programs. The Zoomtern’s work allows Young Storytellers to reach hundreds of students each semester, and for those students to express their unique voices in a brave space during a time when it is needed most. As is true at any non-profit, Young Storytellers is a dynamic environment where flexibility, humor, and openness are integral to our success (especially during a global pandemic.
Community Partners Intern:
The Community Partners Intern will work closely with the YS volunteer team to research, pursue, and consciously build community relationships and partnerships. The day-to-day for this intern will include researching and identifying potential community-based partners in all parts of Los Angeles; developing best practices for defining, developing, and maintaining meaningful and reciprocal relationships with community organizations, including schools, colleges, and universities; and working with the volunteer team to create a strong culture of volunteerism, engagement, and social impact.
