What We Do: We live in a time of great transformations. Our institutions are faltering, from capitalism, to democracy, to the global order. The very meaning of what it is to be human is becoming fragmented. The mission of the Berggruen Institute is to ask questions and develop foundational ideas about how to reshape the political and social institutions in the face of these great transformations. We work across cultures, disciplines, and political boundaries to engage great thinkers in developing and promoting long-term answers to the biggest challenges of the 21st Century.
Transformations of the Human Program
The Transformations of the Human program (ToftH) at the Berggruen Institute is designed as a philosophical study and artistic exploration of the manifold ways in which artificial intelligence and biotechnology challenge our established conceptions of what it means to be human. By placing philosophers and artists in key research sites to foster dialogue with technologists, the aim of the program is to render AI and biotech visible as unusually potent experimental sites for reformulating our vocabulary for thinking about ourselves. The program’s aim is to feed our findings back into the production of both artificial intelligence and biotech, and to thereby contribute to both human and non-human flourishing. For more information about what we do, please see our recently released 2018–2019 portfolio.
The ToftH research program embeds researchers across disciplines at key research sites for a period of up to three years, and invites them to conduct collaborative fieldwork with scientists and engineers. Current research sites include, among others, AI4ALL, Facebook AI Research (FAIR), Google X, Element AI, and Stanford. The Program Manager we seek to recruit will help build up and professionalize our researcher program: from the selection of the candidates, to the onboarding education, to helping build research designs, to articulating and following up on objectives and key results. Roughly 50% or more of this position will entail administrative duties.
