The Preservation Coordinator is a full time, exempt position that requires preservation experience. S/he will collaborate with the organization’s advocacy team to preserve and revitalize the built heritage of Los Angeles County. Creative and innovative thinking is encouraged. This position reports to the Director of Advocacy and spends more than fifty percent of his/her time on discretionary, independent decision making.

Job Duties

  • Prepare responses to Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) and other documents on preservation issues related to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
  • Manage the technical assistance program and provide responses to email, telephone and online inquiries on preservation issues - Requires detailed knowledge of city ordinances, CEQA, and the ability to identify and analyze appropriate responses for resolution. Confers with property owners, neighborhood activists, and real estate experts on specific preservation issues and evaluates and recommends which issues get forwarded through to the Director of Advocacy.
  • Monitor and track relevant public hearings and schedules for Conservancy issues. Oversee the Conservancy’s preservation easement program, including the management and monitoring of properties.
  • Write and regularly contribute for newsletter and other outlets.
  • Manage the Conservancy’s online Preservation Resource Directory of businesses and individuals offering services related to historic building maintenance, repair, design, construction, and rehabilitation to promote compliance with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards and CEQA.
  • Represent the Conservancy at public hearings and meetings on preservation issues.
  • Assist the Directory of Advocacy in implementing the Conservancy’s legislative initiatives on historic preservation policy in the City of Los Angeles and around Los Angeles County.
  • Coordinate semi-annual L.A. Historic Neighborhoods Conference and Landmark THIS! Workshop series, and additional training for Los Angeles’ Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) boards, Realtors, etc.
  • Provide assistance to neighborhoods seeking designation as historic districts, or City of Los Angeles Historic Preservation Overlay Zones (HPOZs), and to existing HPOZs.
  • Meet with community organizations and give presentations on historic preservation and the work of the Conservancy.
  • Provide technical assistance and responses to email, telephone and online inquiries on preservation issues.
  • Manage the full-time, paid advocacy interns and Getty Multicultural Undergraduate Summer interns, and oversee their projects.
  • Research and prepare nominations for City, State and National designations of historic properties as needed.
  • Regularly update, develop and prepares content for Conservancy’s website on advocacy issues and priorities.
  • Use Salesforce to track advocacy issues and as project management tool.
  • Provide support, when needed, on general office administration and with special Conservancy events throughout the year.

Required Qualifications

  • At least three years of relevant professional experience in historic preservation, or a Master’s degree in historic preservation or a related field.
  • Good working knowledge of historic preservation, urban planning, public policy, and architectural history.
  • Meet the 36 CFR Part 61 requirements.
  • Familiarity with and full understanding of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
  • Politically savvy and familiarity with government decision-making on historic preservationand planning issues in the City of Los Angeles, other local governments, and state and national levels.
  • Excellent writing, editing, research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter with good teamwork and organizational skills.
  • Good oral communication skills, and comfort with public speaking.
  • Ability to multi-task.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to speak Spanish or other languages a plus.
