The Institute on Inequality and Democracy at UCLA Luskin seeks a dynamic, independent, creative, and passionate professional to serve as our Events and Communications Manager (ECM). The Institute on Inequality and Democracy is an interdisciplinary research center that advances radical democracy through research, critical thought, and alliances with social movements, and focuses currently on housing justice, predatory financialization, and policing & incarceration. The ECM will support the mission and activities of the Institute, with special emphasis on a year-long project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the ECM will be a key player for the Institute's event and communication activities.
The ECM will lead event organizing and communication projects associated with the Mellon-funded Sawyer Seminar and will work closely with the Director and Deputy Director to organize several high profile events with on- and off-campus partners. Event themes include: sanctuary spaces, racial capitalism, state violence, histories of resistance, and relationships of dispossession, migration, and asylum. In addition, the ECM will collaboratively organize internal planning meetings, faculty reading group sessions, and research workshops for faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students associated with the Sawyer Seminar. The ECM must be familiar with an academic setting and be
experienced in working closely with faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
The ECM will conduct and summarize background research in preparation for programs; organize, participate in and take notes during calls/meetings with collaborators; generate and manage speaker invitations, event marketing, RSVP lists etc.; seek out/track progress with event collaborators, speakers, and participants; and oversee financial management and event budgets associated with the seminar. The ECM will also coordinate closely with the Institute's administrator on event logistics, purchase orders, reimbursements, and event production details as needed.
The ECM will be responsible for creating, designing, and editing event-related materials and this position will create content that includes web stories and press releases for both Institute events, as well as Sawyer Seminar-related programs. The ECM is responsible for translating programs, goals, and outcomes into accessible public-facing content that includes announcements, media briefings, compelling stories, blog posts, and/or multimedia. The ECM will also disseminate these stories to stakeholders on and off campus and be expected to track Institute-related press coverage while working closely with the Institute's core team to promote and amplify the Institute's mission, programs, and strategic goals. The ECM will coordinate with the Institute's administrator to oversee the online portal affiliated with the Sawyer Seminar and will serve as the first contact for press-related inquiries and be responsible for directing requests to the appropriate contact(s).
