Job Description Overview
We are hiring a Development Director to lead the creation and implementation of fundraising strategies for California Calls. Working with the Senior Management Team, the Development Director will oversee and manage fundraising efforts, cultivate relationships with foundations and individual donors, prepare all grant proposals and reports, and communicate our strategic vision, program areas and impact through both written materials and verbal presentations. The projected California Calls Education Fund 2020 budget is estimated at $7 Million. The Development Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer and supervises the Development Manager.

California Calls is an alliance of 30 dynamic local community-based organizations across the state working to achieve real, lasting policy change that strikes at the root causes of poverty, inequality and oppression. We are a pioneer in “Integrated Voter Engagement” which combines statewide on-going voter engagement, state-of-the-art technology and neighborhood- based community organizing to make sure who votes in California reflects who lives in California. By organizing the power of the people locked out of decision-making, building strategic alliances, and waging structural policy battles, we are shaping a new future for California based on justice and equality.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement annual and long-term, innovative fundraising plans
  • Coordinate with Senior Management Team to develop annual budget and revenue projections
  • Coordinate with Chief Financial Officer to comply with all reporting obligations, including lobbying expenditures and political disclosure
  • Work with Development Manager in implementing overall fundraising systems to achieve required results
  • Track grant deliverables and coordinate with programs to assure timely completion
  • Manage the implementation of the Raisers Edge donor database, and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing



  • Prepare all written grant proposals, interim and final reports to foundations
  • Maintain and update basic organizational documents needed for grant proposal submissions, including organizational and project budgets
  • Work with all programs to gather relevant information on program deliverables in order to prepare accurate grant reports
  • In coordination with program and finance staff, prepare and request expenditure and grant modifications as necessary
  • Conduct prospect research on foundations and other sources
  • Coordinate and supervise foundation site visits
  • Oversee filing and tracking systems to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal and reports



  • In coordination with Senior Management Team, initiate, cultivate, and maintain relationships with individual donors
  • Create and supervise regular donor updates and fundraising appeals
  • Create and supervise donor outreach, communication and renewal campaigns
  • Conduct individual prospect research and outreach
  • Create and execute a strategy for a large, sustained basis of small donors



  • Oversee the content and design of printed materials (updates, brochures, invitations) for donor solicitation and stewardship
  • Communicate directly, and on behalf of Senior Management Team, with foundation staff, individual donors and board members



  • Plan, design and manage fundraising events, including donor cultivation and stewardship events
  • Review and approve contracts


Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated interest, understanding and commitment to California Calls’ mission and ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • At least 5 years’ experience in development with strong background in grant writing
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational and managerial skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Independent thinker and self-starter with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines and produce high quality work in a flexible and fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and G-Suite programs
  • Knowledge of Raisers’ Edge donor software


General Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license, personal car insurance, a personal vehicle in good working condition with valid registration.
  • No later than the first day of employment must provide acceptable documents for proof of identity and employment authorization in the United States for Form I-9.


The position is an exempt, salaried position with a salary range of $75,000 to $90,000 depending on experience. Salaries are based on an established range and are not negotiable. California Calls offers full family health and dental benefits at no premium cost to the employee, Flexible Savings Account, 401k plan, generous time off, and work-related mileage reimbursement or transit pass reimbursement. Some out-of-town travel required. Occasional weekend and evening work is required.
