DIY Girls’ mission is to increase girls’ interest in technology, engineering and making through innovative educational experiences. DIY Girls develops and implements STEAM-based educational programs and workshops designed to promote girls’ engagement and exploration with technology, encourage self-confidence and support aspiration to technical careers.

Position Summary: The Director of Development and Communications will directly support the Executive Director with leading and managing DIY Girls’ fund development and communications activities. The ideal candidate will be a creative, strategic thinker who enjoys writing and working with external funders; highly motivated and organized with strong attention to detail; and demonstrate a commitment to empowering girls from low-income backgrounds.

This is a full‐time (40 hours per week), Exempt level position. Benefits include: Vacation Time; Sick Time; Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance; Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA); Life Insurance; 403(b). This position reports to the Executive Director and will be based out of the DIY Girls office in Pacoima, with some travel to meetings, schools, and partner sites.

Role and Responsibilities
Strategy, Management, and Coordination
● Lead the development and implementation of DIY Girls’ fund development and communications plans
● Develop annual grant projections with Executive Director and monitor progress quarterly; assist with grants strategy and implementation
● Develop and implement strategies to increase support for DIY Girls, including thanking and engaging donors
● Lead our end of the year fundraising campaign
● Serve as staff liaison to our board fundraising committee and provide support as needed
● Manage support staff and work with a contracted grant writer as needed
Relationship Management
● Cultivate and manage relationships with funders (corporate, foundation, and individual)
● Work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Programs & Partnerships to continuously engage corporate sponsors in partnership opportunities
● Support the Executive Director during site visits and funder meetings as needed (including coordination, prep, and follow-up)
Writing/Grant Opportunities
● Write and submit letters of intent, grant proposals, and reports to funders
● Research prospective individual, corporate, foundation, and government grants
● Continuously monitor philanthropic trends in grant opportunities within the Los Angeles region and nationally in STEM/STEAM
● Maintain proposal and reports calendar; grant documents; and grant agreements
Events
● Lead the planning of our annual cocktail benefit, including securing and managing sponsorships
● Plan Board “Friendraiser” events as needed and develop new ideas for fun and engaging events to increase supporters
Marketing/Communications
● Develop annual PR/marketing/communications strategies
● Develop strategies and ensure funder recognition (website, social media, e-newsletters)
● Ensure consistency across all communications platforms
● Manage DIY Girls social media accounts and monitor online reputation
● Generate and share engaging content about our programs, events, giving campaigns, and emerging STEM news
● Manage e-communications, updates to website, and marketing materials
● Respond to and coordinate media and press inquiries as needed
Other
● Handle administrative duties as needed and perform other duties as assigned
● Serve as support personnel on special projects and programs as needed

Requirements
● Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
● Minimum 4-5 years experience in non-profit development and communications, including grant writing, event planning, and relationship management with funders
● Highly motivated and organized with strong attention to detail
● Ability to work independently and lead/manage a team
● Excellent written and verbal communications skills
● Strong grant writing, project management, and interpersonal skills
● Ability to produce high quality work in a fast paced environment
● Experience with a website management program such as Squarespace, an email marketing platform such as MailChimp, and a CRM platform preferred
