JOB SUMMARY  

Under the supervision of the Manager, Accounting the Staff Accountant applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports. The Staff Accountant is also responsible for providing support in the oversight of financial compliance by grantees by performing the following duties.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

§ Financial Analysis and Management Reporting  

§ Budget Management and Forecasting 

§ Financial Controls and Compliance 

§ Audit and Internal Controls  


Essential Duties:  

§ Prepares financial statements, income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements for monthly closings, commission meetings, and for independent financial audits and investments  

§ Performs the monthly bank reconciliation 

§ Performs financial and statistical analyses to determine trends, estimates, and significant changes, and writes narrative reports explaining findings 

§ Monitors compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and company procedures 

§ Monitors the fiscal budget of funding agencies to ensure financial compliance and coordinates resolutions 

§ Provides technical assistance and/or training to grantees regarding financial reporting procedures , contract terms, and assists with financial issues 

§ Reviews the proposed budgets for funded agencies and coordinates budgetary concerns with agency staff 

§ Assists First 5 LA departments in the preparation of their annual operating budgets and related financial matters 

§ Assists with budget forecasting for grantees, contractor and departmental budgets 

§ Assist with the data collection and encoding of financial spreadsheets 

§ Helps reconcile any discrepancies or errors identified by communicating with employees and/or clients 

§ Recommends organization innovations/improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. 

§ Develops, installs, modifies, documents, and coordinates implementation of necessary accounting internal control procedures 

§ Participates in the planning and monitoring of independent financial audits 

§ Inputs and processes data in the Blackbaud Accounting system and processes reports as directed 

§ Assists the Payroll & Accounts Payable Coordinator and Assistant in reconciling Blackbaud expense reports and the general ledger with the check register 

§ Ability to exercise discretion in handling sensitive or confidential information or situations 

§ Supports the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and values a diversity of perspectives  

§ Adheres to policies and procedures to ensure alignment with State regulations, local ordinances and First 5 LA directives  

§ Keeps apprised of all laws, regulations, statutes, rules and policies affecting First 5 LA and Proposition 10  

§ Supervises contractors and consultants, as needed  

§ Collaborates both internally and with external stakeholders to capture, synthesize and share learning and knowledge outcomes from the ongoing execution of all activities as necessary

Experience: 

§ Minimum of six years of related accounting experience preferred  

§ Minimum of four years in non-profit accounting or governmental accounting systems preferred 


Education: 
§ Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business, analytics, management, mathematics, economics, or a related field preferred 


Computer Skills:  

§ Proficiency in Blackbaud Accounting software 

§ Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) 

§ Ability to use widely supported internet browsers 


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: 

§ Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions 

§ Valid automobile liability insurance  

  

Travel Requirements: 

§ This position requires travel locally, statewide and nationally as needed
