Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. As a national online force driven by 1.5 million members, we move decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. We activate our members to take action on crucial issues — from criminal justice to media representations to the social safety net and voter freedom — so that we can build the power necessary to transform the written and unwritten rules of society. Our work – both rapid response and long-term campaigns for change – amplifies the voices of Black folks and our allies, building power and delivering meaningful wins that create consequences for racial injustice and build momentum for implementing solutions that move Black people and all people forward.

Color Of Change is hiring a National Data Director to lead the expansion of its data operations across a broad spectrum of digital campaigns, field organizing, and electoral mobilization. This is a unique opportunity to join a deeply-skilled and innovative team at the forefront of Black liberation and empowerment within a rapidly growing, digitally-driven organization with a budget of $21 million.

The National Data Director position is a hybrid role for a senior leader possessing broad skills in the field of digital campaigning. The ideal candidate will be fluent in strategic data analysis. They will also possess the management and communication skills to effectively build and develop a data-driven culture across an entire organization.

While strategic use of data is important across many aspects of the organization, the primary role of this position is focused on helping our campaigns team meet digital fundraising and growth goals -- with particular focus on engaging members through our email program.

You’ll have direct reports to delegate responsibilities to, but the nature of the role will also require your own deep direct engagement with data. Meeting these goals will require not only the analytical skills to develop actionable insights from our data, but also the management skills to turn those insights into clear processes that the team can execute on.

The National Data Director will be based in one of four Color Of Change offices (Oakland, CA, Washington DC, Los Angeles or New York City).

  • Drive a data-driven culture in which the accurate analysis of data is a core component of campaign decision-making
  • Work with the Talent & Human Resources team to recruit, hire, manage, and develop a high-performing data team skilled in digital and email analytics (fundraising, growth, etc.), field organizing, and voter engagement
  • Drive a research and experimentation agenda to inform team strategies
  • Champion learnings both internally and externally and ensure these learnings are applied to team strategies
  • Report key insights, trends, and recommendations to staff, internal stakeholders, and external partners
  • Design and manage the day-to-day operations and vendors of the data infrastructure supporting digital campaigns, fundraising and engagement, field organizing, and electoral mobilization
  • Make data more accessible to campaigners and organizers
  • Ensure that core data sources -- including our campaign CRM, voter file, and analysis platform -- are working well and fully used by the team
  • Ensure the full team has the best training possible to be effective consumers of data and data products
  • Develop and lead ongoing training of new and existing campaign staff, design new and altered management practices, and serve as an internal thought leader
  • Package data analysis for external stakeholders to effectively understand insights (for funders, the board, etc.)
  • Analyze data effectively to inform campaigning decisions in support of racial justice campaigners organizing in various issue areas (including but not limited to corporate and media accountability, criminal justice, and voting rights)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to package complex data analysis into clear and concise documents, slide decks, and data visualizations for funders, boards, and other external audiences
  • A background building new processes and cultural norms that reinforce data-driven decision-making
  • Significant experience in digital campaigning -- especially in optimizing email program performance -- including best practices for meeting growth, engagement, and fundraising goals
  • Experience understanding how to use and manage data in an electoral, campaign, or organizing context
  • Familiarity with voter engagement tools and data challenges in targeting, identification, persuasion, and Get Out the Vote efforts
  • Ability to use database and stats package tools required to effectively analyze data (SQL is mandatory, but we don’t care what your preferred stats approach is as long as it efficiently gets the job done)
  • A robust racial justice analysis and equity lens, especially with respect to the questions and assumptions that inform data management and decision-making
  • A proven track record as a strong manager, including hiring and retaining a high-performing team
  • Ability to operate effectively in an environment with many remote teammates
  • Commitment to confidentiality and discretion. In this role, you’ll have a window into movement and organizational politics at the highest level -- and confidentiality is critical
  • Experience using ActBlue and ActionKit helpful, but not required

CLASSIFICATION, COMPENSATION, AND BENEFITS: This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary is $130,000 - $135,000, commensurate with experience. Color Of Change offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous vacation and holiday schedules and medical, dental, and disability insurance.
