The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County seek a seasoned communications strategist and media relations professional to design and implement strategies and institutional messaging that cultivate relationships with media and stakeholders, raising awareness of our museums and inspiring engagement with our many offerings.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 106 years ago, and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHM at Exposition ParkLa Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement. The Director of Communications is responsible for leading the translation of institutional vision into a results-oriented communications program across all platforms.

The responsibilities for this position includes, but are not limited to:

  • Works with the Sr. Vice President of Strategic Engagement to ensure divisional/departmental implementation of the communication components of NHMLAC strategic plan and framework.
  • Raise awareness of museums by generating high-level media coverage of leadership, new strategic direction, new projects, campaign, announcement of major gifts.
  • Develops relationships with local, regional, national and international print, broadcast, and online media outlets generating coverage and raising awareness for NHMLAC.
  • Produces large press previews for exhibition openings and initiative launches, smaller press moments, and photo opportunities. Develops all attendant press material including press releases, image galleries, videos, b-roll, biographies and background documents. Creates talking points, position statements, and messaging for museum principals, trustees, supporters, and staff.
  • Manages a team of content creators in the Communications section of Marketing and Communications Department (Senior Content Manager, Digital Content Developer, Social Media Manager, and Communications Coordinator).
  • Participates in a departmental team that brands the three museums as relevant, engaging destinations for visitors of all ages and backgrounds, while maintaining scholarly integrity and buy-in from the curatorial staff. Adapt this brand voice into appropriate, audience-specific messaging in publications, video, social media, public relations, fundraising, marketing and advertising outreach, and internal communication.Writes, edits, and / or project manages, or collaborates on, content creation, vetting, and distribution for several museum departments, in digital, print, and video platforms including NHMLAC websites, digital marketing campaigns, social media, the Naturalist member magazine (print and digital), Board of Trustee material, campaign case statements, videos for internal and external audiences, leadership PowerPoints, and speeches. Makes sure these separate content pieces coalesce into a single, branded, strategic narrative, adhering to NHMLAC’s vision and strategic framework.
