The Arboretum Summer Nature Camp is an extraordinary program that offers nature adventure, the science behind gardening, and arts and crafts focused on nature and the outdoors. The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden is currently seeking a qualified, enthusiastic, creative art educator that can bring the highest quality of commitment and caring to our campers. Instructors must enjoy teaching, being outdoors, and creating innovative, hands-on experiences for active and curious young minds. Below are the two areas that applicants must have a working knowledge of to be a possible fit. 


Arts and Crafts - Experience working with all art media (painting, drawing, clay, tie-dying, papier mache, natural materials, etc.).  Must be able to design and implement a creative arts and crafts program for children ages 5-11 as well as maintain and organize supplies for the area.


Outdoor Activities – Experience creating and implementing games and activities for young children.  The instructor must be able to create and facilitate fun activities, suitable for 5-11 year olds, which foster an appreciation of nature and the environment.  Games can be facilitated with age appropriate debriefing to enhance the educational value.


Additional Responsibilities:


  • Approach education with passion and excitement!
  • Responsible for leading groups of 10-20 kids throughout the day’s art and recreation activities with the help of 5-8 counselors and the Camp Director.
  • Lead class and recreation group rotation
  • Build positive group dynamics among our camp team
  • Develop new art activities and classes for each week
  • Interact with parents in a professional and energetic manner
  • Give positive reinforcement to campers
  • Help cultivate confidence and self-esteem, as well as a natural love for learning.



  • Love working with kids!
  • College Degree in arts or related field
  • Must be 21 years old or older
  • Experience working with K-6th grade children
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Three or more years of experience facilitating youth education in informal education or the classroom
  • Responsible and dependable
  • A good role model with strong academic standing
  • Previous camp experience required
  • Contagious enthusiasm and charisma
  • Team player


Educators must be available for the entire 10-week program and for up to 40 hours prior to camp starting for lesson planning.  Actual camp sessions are Monday- Friday, June 3th- 7th and August 5th-9th. There will also be an instructor planning and orientation meeting prior to the beginning of camp; date TBD. Salary is DOE.  Up to 40 hours per week, 8:00-4:30 or 8:30-5:00 which includes a mandatory 30-minute lunch break.  Teachers are expected to create lesson plans and supply lists for each session and have them submitted by the required date.  All supplies are provided.  Prior to employment, all candidates will go through a background check including fingerprinting by LA County.


Physical Requirements:

Must be able to capably lift 25 pounds of equipment, bend comfortably at the knees and waist, twist, climb stairs, walk comfortably on unpaved surfaces, stand and walk for extended periods of time (up to 3 hours).

Summer Camp Director must be able to work outside in varying weather conditions.
