Based in Los Angeles, Clergy and Laity for Economic Justice (CLUE) is seeking a full time Executive Director (ED). The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, partner/community outreach and program development. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors. The ideal applicants are resourceful, entrepreneurial faith leaders with demonstrated success in fundraising, partnership development and effective management and possess visionary optimism for leading the organization in the creation of a sacred and just society.
CLUE is an innovative interfaith association of over 600 religious leaders throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. We come together to support low-wage and mid-income workers in their struggles for a living wage, health benefits, respect and a voice in the corporate and political decisions which affect them. CLUE employs cutting-edge strategies in partnership with the labor community and community organizations to increase workers' capacity to impact their employers, to attain worker-friendly public policies and to persuade commercial/industrial developers to enter into community benefits agreements.
The Executive Director is the key organizational leader of CLUE and will serve as the face of CLUE in the community. The ED is responsible for enhancing the public perception of the organization and building partnerships with others in the served communities.
Organizational Background In 1996 a group of clergy and lay people gathered to support the idea of a “living wage”. That dialogue among faith community leaders, social justice advocates and union members led to the founding of CLUE as an organization to advocate for worker justice. The founders rooted their efforts in the faith values and sacred scriptures that combine the moral authority and witness of their various traditions to encounter the real-world policies that keep working people poor. CLUE, an economic justice advocacy organization, “educates, organizes, and mobilizes the faith community to accompany workers in their struggle for good jobs, dignity, and justice.” Working closely with other advocacy groups, labor unions, religious denominations, and educators, CLUE brings a creative spiritual voice and moral authority to economic justice campaigns. Within our collaborative efforts, we hearken back to ancient traditions and to the moral commitments of the faith community to shape conversation and strategy for critical local, state, and federal legislative efforts that seek to transform and improve the lives of working people. Our work includes advocacy surrounding workplace conditions, immigrant rights, restorative justice, affordable housing, racial justice, and any quality of life matters that undermine the economic outcomes of those in the margins.
● In partnership with a devoted and active board of directors, the ED will lead the implementation and further development of the organization’s strategic plan.
Financial Performance and Viability:
● The ED will lead activities to secure financial sustainability and diversify support for our mission from individuals, unions, corporations, foundations, and other sources.
Organization Mission and Strategy:
● Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
● Oversees the utilization of appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.
Board Relations and Support
● Work with Board leadership to develop a culturally competent, diverse, effective and engaged Board
● Work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in campaigns, policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization
● Oversee organization’s Board and Board committee meetings
● Collaborate with the Board and Board Committees to implement bylaws, policies and procedures, governance structure, strategy and planning for continued Board recruitment and development, and training in governance best practices
● Guide development and implementation of Development Plan
● Fundraise and develop other resources necessary to support CLUE’s mission;
● Lead activities to secure financial sustainability and diversify support for our mission from individuals, unions, corporations, foundations and other sources.
Leadership and Program Management
● Implementation of CLUE’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission
● Implement CLUE’s strategic plan
● Evaluate the organizational structure, respond to evolving needs, and configure staff positions as required
● Lead, motivate, and assess full-time staff, interns, students, and support personnel who have diverse experiences and skills
● Enhance CLUE’s programs by being familiar with CLUE programs and geographic committees and mobilizations active in the community and by coordinating closely with other strategic partner organizations
● Oversee the recruitment, training, collaboration and supervision of staff
● Review and approve contracts for services
Marketing, Communications and Public Relations
● Increase awareness, visibility, influence, and impact of the organization
● Build new partnerships with funders, donors, decision makers, and community leaders to optimize program evolution and execution
● Work to enhance CLUE’s image by being active and visible in CLUE Committee meetings and mobilizations, in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations
● Establish and maintain relationships with partner organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance CLUE’s Mission
● Oversee marketing and other communications efforts
● Ensure the organization has a robust website and online social media presence
● Oversee the management of the financial planning and forecasting, budgeting, and resource allocation
● Plan and operate an annual budget
● Oversee and implement appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate;
● Monitor appropriate investment strategy for funds
● Facilitate periodic accounting audit
Operations and management
● Responsible for hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff
● Sign all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization
● Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of CLUE
● Supervise and collaborate with organization staff
● Supports, encourages, and provides professional growth and development opportunities for staff
● Evaluate services delivery and measure client agency/collaborator feedback and insure best practices are utilized
● Cross-cultural and interfaith competency
● Moral and ethical authority in voice and practice that are grounded in a faith tradition that honors the dignity of individuals and the work of the organization
● Commitment to social justice and immigrant rights
● Transparent and high integrity leadership
● Effective budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
● Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
● Ability to convey the vision of CLUE’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers and donors
● Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector
● Skills to collaborate with and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers
● Excellent written and oral communication skills
● Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups
● Ability to oversee, inspire and collaborate with staff
● Effective coordination of activities with multiple components requiring independent follow through and attention to detail.
● Hands-on experience with multi-faith social justice work
● Familiarity with local organization partners and their economic justice campaigns

● $75,000-85,000 Annually plus a generous benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance and paid vacation
