KOUNKUEY DESIGN INITIATIVE is currently seeking an intern to assist our community team in the Eastern Coachella Valley. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated and creative self-starter to work directly with two local food cooperatives. The individual would help oversee and execute the food cooperatives’ food selling operations at the 2019 Coachella Music Festival. The position is based in our Eastern Coachella Valley office in North Shore, and will require attendance at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio for both weekends towards the end of April.

Job Description:
The Coachella Festival Intern will work closely with the Planning and Community Departments to support our economic development programs, in particular the two food collective businesses of Delicias Laguna Azul and Antojitos Mexicanos Oasis (AMO). The Coachella Festival Intern will support the project manager and community associates on planning, coordination, communication, implementation, and management/oversight of the 2 events (both weekends at the festival). The intern will also be a point of contact with the Coachella Festival caterers, Best Beverage Catering (BBC) who are contracting Delicias and AMO to sell at the event. This position requires some heavy lifting and physical labor. This position will require up to 12-hour days on two consecutive weekends with intense periods of activity in a festival setting. Overtime compensation will be provided for work days that are over 8 hours.

The intern position is a full time (40hrs a week for 3 weeks) from April 1st to April 23rd. The time previous to festival days will be dedicated to preparing for the events, having regular check ins with the two groups and KDI, and ongoing communication with BBC.

  • Overseeing preparation for events: managing equipment rental, food purchase planning, tent logistics and hiring plans, signage displays of menu and pricing, organizing the tent decorations
  • Managing food purchasing and pick-up: order and pickup food and material supplies in LA, rent refrigerated truck and manage the delivery of supplies to Indio, coordinate with BBC where to park truck, and where tents will be located within the festival
  • Setting up the tent for selling the day before the event starts: bringing in equipment, setting up stations, thinking through water and electricity connections, coordinate with BBC regarding utilities, materials purchasing from them, parking and transportation considerations, rent golf cart for duration of festival
  • Managing tent operations on event days: managing hired help in the tent: making sure they have parking passes and arrive on time for food prep, keeping track of hours worked and breaks, overseeing food, materials, supplies, and managing front of house sales
  • Closing out the festival with BBC: meeting with BBC to go over square sales report, paying the commission, getting back the deposit, returning square tablets to Square tent, packing up equipment and closing down the tent, compiling hours worked information and tips for disbursal

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (verbal required, written preferred but not required)
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent management abilities, understanding of logistics, and people skills
  • Experience with event planning.
  • Must be able to provide their own transportation
  • 2-3-year Food and Beverage experience or bachelor degree in related field.
  • Is familiar with the Eastern Coachella Valley
