A Place Called Home (APCH) is a 25-year old dynamic, non-profit youth center located in South Central Los Angeles, annually serving 1,000 youth eight years old to mid-twenties, their families, and the community at large. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance, art, nutrition, recreation and athletics-- we even have organic fruit, vegetable and flower gardens. We have a robust college preparation and scholarship program, and have sent more than 400 young people from South Central to college. In 2017 we launched our Professional Readiness & Employment Program to support young people in preparing for and securing meaningful, good paying jobs. Our charter high school partnership is open throughout the school year and provides academic support and wraparound services for students in the foster care system, on probation, and without stable homes.
The APCH annual budget is $6.5 million. Of that, 36% is from foundations, 28% is from events, 22% is from individuals, and 12% is from corporations. Additionally, we receive and distribute more than $1 million in in-kind goods throughout the year.
APCH has been growing 8-10% annually for nearly a decade, and has plans for significant additional growth. This new position has been created as part of a phased restructure to expand the development department at APCH into three functional columns under the leadership of a Director of Institutional Giving, a Director of Individual Giving, and a Director of Special Initiatives & External Relations, respectively, each with distinct scopes of work and opportunities for overlap. In addition to Institutional Giving (foundations, organizations and government), the Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for Database Management. The Director of Institutional Giving will also work closely with the Director of Special Initiatives & External Relations to maximize corporate giving. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Institutional Giving provides dynamic leadership for fundraising initiatives and activities under their purview and oversees a staff of 4. The Director of Institutional Giving will expand A Place Called Home’s fundraising capabilities and elevate A Place Called Home’s fundraising goals as per a Development Plan with short- and long-range goals and in alignment with the agency’s overall Strategic Plan and goals.
Responsibilities and Outcomes
The Director of Institutional Giving is charged with:
· Personally developing, leading, and growing all income, resource development and outreach categories under their purview. They will identify, cultivate, solicit, build and manage relationships with foundations and government donors and prospects, and will share responsibility with the Director of Special Initiatives & External Relations for corporate donors and prospects. They will coach, coordinate and support development staff and contractors in coordinating and executing strategies, initiatives and tasks in these areas. They will oversee their team in planning and executing all current and future strategies and utilize internal and external resources to engage donors, and they will develop a robust pipeline of potential donors through effective research and networking. They will employ regular telephonic and electronic communications with institutional supporters and prospects. They will coordinate and collaborate with the Director of Individual Giving and Director of Special Initiatives & External Relations to ensure that all areas of overlap are communicated, planned and executed flawlessly and with no friction or unnecessary redundancy of effort.
· Developing and executing a strategy to increase revenue from government sources (currently just 1.5% of budget) steadily over the coming years. They will work closely with the Associate Director of Development and staff to develop capacity to solicit and report at a level that will support a robust government income stream.
· Working in partnership with the ED, the Director of Individual Giving, and Director of Special Initiatives & External Relations to support and report to the Board.
· Providing energetic, charismatic, visible leadership, inspiration and direction to the combined development and communications staff (current team of 12, in collaboration with the Director of Individual Giving and Director of Special Initiatives & External Relations. They will foster an enthusiastic, collaborative, and learning spirit in the department. They will mentor, coach, encourage and serve their team, providing constant support for personal and professional development. They will actively support and contribute to a healthy culture and ecosystem at APCH.
· Providing direct supervision to the Associate Director of Development and the Data & Outcomes Manager.
· Identifying, cultivating and maintaining key partnerships and relationships with colleague organizations and leveraging those partnerships to pursue and secure joint government funding opportunities. They will become knowledgeable regarding statistics and eligibility for special government opportunities for CBO’s in our neighborhood.
· Supervising the continuing development and improvement of our development database. They will ensure that donor and gift records and reports are executed and maintained accurately and in a timely fashion, and that appropriate research is conducted on donors and prospects. They will ensure that donors and volunteers are acknowledged and informed appropriately and in a timely fashion, and that robust donor and volunteer retention and relationship-building activities are executed.
· Coordinating with the accounting department to monitor progress and generate reports for all foundation and government grants, analyze results, and report to the ED. They will work closely with the ED and others on the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
· Working closely with Programs Department leadership on budgeting, narrative and reporting for grants and contracts.
· Working closely with the Data & Outcomes Manager, Chief of Staff, and ED to develop and utilize evaluation data, both for reporting purposes and for program improvement purposes.
· Developing and implementing strategies, in collaboration with the Director of Individual Giving, campaign counsel, Board, and others, to solicit institutional gifts for the upcoming Capital Campaign. While the Director of Individual Giving will be the lead staff member on the Campaign, it is expected that the Director of Institutional Giving will also be actively involved in campaign planning and execution.
· Serving as a member of, and developing strong working relationships with, the APCH senior leadership team, and contributing insight and input on agency-wide strategy, priorities and issues.
· Management by Metrics: Ensure that team members are fully informed of plans, campaigns, schedules, communications collateral, goals and benchmarks; and establish a stronger metrics-based approach to Development to track progress toward goals and support a culture of continuous improvement through working smarter with current resources. Empower and mentor the team to implement corrective actions based on the metrics, ensuring on time, high quality deliverables, and that each employee takes ownership of their own performance and the team’s performance.
· Other duties as assigned by the ED.
Strong commitment to personal and team excellence, innovation and growth. Proven fundraising skills, especially in the area of institutional donor relationships, campaigns and systems. Track record of successfully raising funds for a similar budget, managing others, and providing leadership to Board, staff, vendors and volunteers preferred. Experience in support or leadership position for a capital campaign preferred. Ability to think strategically and creatively, as well as to implement and follow-through. Deep appreciation for and personal interest in the APCH mission and community. Ability to work under pressure, with grace, diplomacy and joy. Excellent oral and written communications skills, and ability to be a compelling advocate and ambassador for A Place Called Home’s work. 10+ years of non-profit fundraising experience preferred. A team player with personal attributes of honesty, integrity, persistence, flexibility, enthusiasm, curiosity, accessibility, commitment to high team morale, open communications, and self-awareness. Sense of humor and ability to have fun under pressure are major assets. Availability for some evening and weekend activities throughout the year.
HOURS: Full-time, exempt position (some evening and weekend hours).
LOCATION: A Place Called Home is located in South Central Los Angeles
SALARY: $90,000-$110,000 DOE
