Inner-City Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts organization located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, serving more than 8,000 children, teens, educators and family members annually during the school day, after school and on weekends. We believe that the arts are transformative and the cornerstone of a high-quality education that levels the learning field across socioeconomic boundaries. Inner-City Arts is a dynamic nonprofit organization that raises from philanthropic sources more than 90% of the revenue needed to support annual programs and operations for a $4+ million annual operating budget. $1M is currently raised through event fundraising and $300,000 from non-event individual donations. The organization has developed a strategic plan that entails significant growth over the next five years, including opening several new sites.
Responsibilities and Outcomes
The Director of Individual Giving and Events will be charged with personally developing, leading, and growing major individual gift activities. Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and builds relationships with donors and prospects with the capacity to give major and leadership gifts. Works in close partnership with the CEO, members of the Board, contractor, and other development staff members in coordinating their activities in this area, providing coaching and coordination, and leads in creating a cultural shift where individual donors are sought after and highly valued. Designs strategies to engage donors, and develops tailored proposals and engagement opportunities. Builds a robust pipeline of potential donors through effective research and networking. Constant face-to-face, telephone, and electronic communications with organizational supporters and prospects. It is expected that the Director will spend 50% of time and effort on this responsibility.
In partnership with the CEO and Director of Institutional Giving, provides energetic and visible leadership and motivation to the Board, Founders Board, and other leadership volunteers. Works with the Board and CEO to develop and implement plans to recruit and involve leadership-level volunteers.
In collaboration with the Director of Institutional Giving and Director of Communications, provides joint leadership and direction to the development and communications staff (current team of 10). Fosters an enthusiastic, collaborative, and learning spirit in the department. Provides direct supervision to the Associate Director of Events and Development Manager.
Oversees activities to raise smaller and mid-range gifts from individual donors, through direct mail, monthly giving, email campaigns, social media, crowdfunding, peer-to-peer fundraising, the website, events, and other means. Ensures that donors are acknowledged and thanked appropriately, and that robust donor retention and relationship-building activities are executed. Works with the Volunteer Manager to encourage individual donors to become involved as volunteers and volunteers to become financial supporters.
Develops and implements strategies to raise funds and increase organizational visibility through high-quality, well-produced fundraising events, including the Imagine Awards Gala and Summer on Seventh. Personally conducts and leads others in event sponsorship and ticket-sales solicitation activities, including developing materials and soliciting sponsors. Initiates and develops new fundraising events. Recruits and works closely with event chairs, committee members, and honorees and their representatives.
Monitors progress toward goals for all campaigns, and analyzes results. Shares regular updates on progress towards goals with senior management, the Board, and campaign leadership. Works closely with the CFO and CEO and others on the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
Ensures that donor and gift records and contact reports are collected and maintained accurately, and that appropriate research is conducted on donors and prospects.
Serves as a member of Inner-City Arts’ Leadership Team. Builds strong working relationships with leaders and staff in other departments. Offers insight and input on agency-wide priorities and issues.
Strong commitment to personal and team excellence. Proven fundraising skills, especially in the area of individual donor relationships. Track record of successfully raising funds, managing a team, and providing leadership to board, staff, and volunteers, preferably at multiple organizations. Ability to think strategically and creatively, as well as to implement and follow-through. Deep appreciation for and personal interest in the arts, and understanding of their value and importance. Ability to work under pressure, with grace and diplomacy. Excellent oral and written communications skills, and ability to passionately communicate the impact of Inner-City Arts’ work. 10+ years of non-profit fundraising experience preferred. A team player with personal attributes of honesty, integrity, persistence, flexibility, enthusiasm, curiosity, and self-awareness. Availability for frequent evening and weekend activities.
HOURS: Full-time, exempt position (will require some evening and weekend hours).
LOCATION: Inner-City Arts is located in the downtown Los Angeles Warehouse District, adjacent to the Produce Mart.
