KDI is currently seeking a Design Build Intern to work with our Design and Planning Departments on upcoming Build Days – intensive construction and fabrication shifts to create public space furniture and amenities for a late October event. The Design Build Intern will work closely with our Design Coordinator and other staff in our downtown Los Angeles office, and in shared workspaces around the city. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in design and fabrication, and producing pop-up events in public space.
KDI is working with LA County to activate a 4–Acre vacant lot in South L.A. at the corner of Vermont and Manchester. Vacant for 26 years, the lot is now slated to be developed into affordable housing, a school, and a transit plaza. Full build-out will take years. In the meantime, working with LA County, we are producing a series of 4 pop-up events from October 2018 to May 2019 to activate the lot, creating temporary community spaces in the short term while helping people imagine its long-term future.
For our next event on October 27, KDI we will install custom-designed benches and signage to transform the lot. The Design Build Intern’s work will include basic carpentry, painting, assembly of custom-designed pieces, site installation, and other related tasks.
There will opportunities for the Design Build Intern to continue working with us on future Build Days, as well as on a wider range of design and planning projects.
• Experience with construction and building: carpentry, exhibitions, installations, and other similar experience. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to work quickly with low-cost materials to produce durable and attractive objects.
• Willingness to work full days preferred. Minimum 4-hour shifts required. We are looking to bring someone on immediately.
