KOUNKUEY DESIGN INITIATIVE is currently seeking a planning associate to add to our growing team of about 20 staff in Los Angeles, CA. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated and creative self-starter to work directly with under-resourced communities throughout Southern California on community-driven development. The position is based in our downtown Los Angeles office, but requires frequent travel to our projects in the Eastern Coachella Valley and other areas in Southern California.
The Planning Associate will work closely with the Planning, Design, and Community Departments to develop, implement, and lead our participatory design process, economic and social development programs, mobility planning, and site planning on various public space projects in the Southern California region. The Planning Associate will support project managers (Planning Coordinators).
Initially, the Planning Associate will focus on our project with California State Parks to improve park equity statewide. We will be supporting 12 municipalities to create new parks in low-income, park-poor communities through a new $250M funding stream and grant application process. The Planning Associate will assist in mapping and analyzing areas of need, evaluating potential park sites, and developing public engagement activities and tools.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish (verbal and written) strongly preferred
• Masters degree in Urban Planning or related field
• 1-3 years working experience in community development, policy advocacy, economic development, or urban planning. Basic project management experience preferred.
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills
• Excellent writing and analytical abilities
• Proficient in Adobe InDesign and GIS
• Experience with transportation planning a plus, but not required
• Strong commitment to social and environmental justice
