Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE) seeks a current graduate student for a part-time internship during the current academic term, with potential to extend through the remainder of the academic year. This position will support building a grassroots base to win strategic campaigns in the areas of climate justice, equitable investment, and workforce development; with particular focus on campaigns to improve South LA’s competitiveness in securing climate investments and to organize residents along major transit improvement corridors in the South LA region. The intern will work across the Campaign and Program Teams, report to the Campaign Director, and may be assigned other ad-hoc projects as they arise.


Key Responsibilities

● Develop and help to deliver popular education materials and curricula for Black, Latinx, working class, and poor South LA residents organizing on issue-based campaigns

● Support development and implementation of democratic processes and structures to ensure community and member input in campaign strategies and tactics

● Work with staff in coordinating events, actions, and other campaign activities


Skills and Knowledge

● 1-2 years prior community or labor organizing experience, particularly in the area of leadership development in issue-based campaigns

● 1-2 years prior experience developing educational materials or curricula

● Familiarity with transportation policy areas such as Transit Oriented Development, Active Transportation, Vision Zero Plans, and relevant participatory processes

● Familiarity with, if not in-depth understanding of, climate justice, equitable investment, workforce development, and other key policy areas impacting low income communities of color and working class families in Los Angeles

● Some investigative research experience including industry, policy, or issue analysis



● Strong writing and communication skills

● Excellent attention to detail

● Strong record of systems management

● Demonstrated interest/knowledge of grassroots campaigns

● Demonstrated interest in social change through community organizing to build and exercise grassroots power

● Demonstrates proficiency in all elements of organizing through leadership development and mentoring instead of assuming primary responsibility for success


The intern will work approximately 15-20 hours per week, with a flexible schedule, and be compensated starting at $15/hour. The desired start date is October 8th or 15th and the end date is flexible.
