This is a part-time intermittent position, and we are looking to hire several people for this role.


Under the direction of the Communications Manager, Marketing Strategies, the Event Staff assists with the logistics of community events and activities, including event set-up and strike/break-down, staffing the event booth and conducting community outreach on behalf of First 5 LA at assigned events.

Essential Duties:

Materials Management

  • Communicates with the Communications Manager, Marketing Strategies to customize materials needed for each event
  • Transports First 5 LA equipment, supplies and collateral materials to and from event locations
  • Alerts the Communications Manager, Marketing Strategies when supplies or collateral materials need to be restocked


Pre-Event and On-site Event Coordination & Community Outreach

  • Creates a timeline for planning activities for each event for review and approval by the Communications Manager, Marketing Strategies; carries out the approved timeline for each event in a timely manner
  • Performs booth set-up, including set-up of tables, tablecloths, banners, giveaways, brochures and other items as defined in the approved event plan
  • Staffs the booth and conducts community education and outreach to event participants
  • Engages with families, caregivers and children at events in a respectful and inclusive manner
  • Shares prepared talking points about First 5 LA and its mission and the connection to the event
  • Provides information about First 5 LA programs and initiatives
  • Distributes First 5 LA collateral materials
  • Provides information about resources for young children and families in Los Angeles County
  • Educates community members about First 5 LA’s four goal areas
  • Provides information to encourage the public to become engaged in First 5 LA’s programs such as the Best Start Communities place-based effort and Welcome Baby’s Home Visitation
  • Directs participants to general resources in Los Angeles County


Post-Event Breakdown

  • Performs full strike/breakdown of booth activity area, including gathering of First 5 LA materials and property, removal of directional signage and disposal of garbage
  • Transports unused materials and property back to First 5 LA
  • Completes and submits a post-event report with recommendations for future participation


Rotating Responsibilities as Event Lead as needed

Depending on need, several event staff may be assigned to a single event. In these instances, an “event lead” will be designated to coordinate and facilitate event logistics.  Event Lead duties will rotate among all Event Staff team members. These duties include:

  • Acts as the primary point of contact for event producers for the day
  • Ensures assigned event staff arrive on time; contacts the Communications Manager, Marketing Strategies immediately if an event staff member is late or does not present to work
  • Coordinates the booth staffing schedule to ensure that all event staff members are able to take breaks and lunches as provided by law
  • Troubleshoots issues with event producers to ensure that the event is successfully executed
  • Supports the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and values a diversity of perspectives
  • Adheres to policies and procedures to ensure alignment with State regulations, local ordinances and First 5 LA directives
  • Keeps apprised of all laws, regulations, statutes, rules and policies affecting First 5 LA and Proposition 10
  • Collaborates both internally and with external stakeholders to capture, synthesize and share learning and knowledge outcomes from the ongoing execution of all activities as necessary

Job Specific Competencies

  • Role Specific Content: Outgoing personality and excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to engage with the public of all ages and backgrounds; fluency in Armenian, Farsi, Khmer, Mandarin or Spanish is highly desirable; must have access to reliable transportation that can accommodate a minimum of four standard banker’s boxes of promotional materials

  • Minimum of six months of experience as a health promoter, community outreach worker, or staffing booths at events



  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred


Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to use widely supported internet browsers


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
  • Valid automobile liability insurance


Travel Requirements:

  • This position requires travel throughout Los Angeles County up to 90% of the time as needed
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends
