Position Summary
We’re looking for an experienced and customer service focused Shop Manager to help manage the Advanced Prototyping Center (APC) shop and welding shop at the La Kretz Innovation Campus. The shop manager will be a key piece of our APC team procuring, commissioning, running and maintaining all aspects of the shops. In addition, the manager will engage with the local community to identify new APC team members, Advisors and APC members who are interested in contributing their knowledge and skills to the APC.


  • Maintain a culture of customer service, respect, and personal responsibility for APC community.
  • Ensure compliance, cleanliness, and safety in regards to all equipment and shop space.
  •  Manage shop space, organization, inventory, machine maintenance and machine use.
  • Implement and maintain systems for shop safety, security, and equipment access.
  • Managing a streamlined shop workflow with best practices.
  • Oversee cleanliness, organization, and maintenance of shop area and equipment.
  • Conduct calibration of shop equipment and maintain an equipment maintenance log
  • Develop a tracking system for materials ordering.
  • Create and manage an inventory system to keep stock available.
  • Create and/or maintain relationships with suppliers, equipment manufacturers, service providers and LACI partners.
  • Work with APC members and APC Team to implement APC Policies.
  • Create and update educational content to train users on machine shop tools and APC resources.
  • Communicate with APC community members to receive feedback and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with  APC community members to meet their prototyping needs with respect to platform, tools and equipment.
  • Assist with community feedback via online platform to capture opportunities for improvement to maximize safety, creativity and member satisfaction.
  • Work closely with Accounting to maintain proper purchasing flow for the APC shops.
  • Train and mentor APC interns and volunteers to assist with APC Operations.
  • Manage and maintain Job Shop pipeline and service capability, including correspondence with customers, providing Job Shop quotes and executing on Job Shop jobs.



  • 5 to 10 year’s experience working in a machine shop.
  • At least 2 year’s experience managing a machine shop.
  • Experience with CNC Mill, CNC Lathe, Manual Mill, Water Jet, & Machine Shop Tools.
  • Familiarity with 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, welding, buffing, grinding, bending.
  • Familiarity with CAD: Solidworks, Fusion 360 a plus.
  • Experience designing, building and assembling prototypes.
  • Experience in customer service.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers.
  • Can do attitude towards technology and creativity with a strong willingness to learn.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to move heavy objects.
