About this organization

Join the leadership team at LA Public Press, a fast-growing news source generating tremendous community engagement and impact in the nation’s largest county.
Almost 3 years since incorporation, LA Public Press has renewed and built on its foundational funding, and is now consistently publishing independent and original reporting that reaches hundreds of thousands of Angelenos each month. We’re seeking a visionary fundraiser and passionate revenue leader to continue building our momentum by expanding our donor base
through lasting relationships, and diversifying revenue to ensure the financial sustainability of independent journalism in LA.
This new role works hand in hand with the founding Publisher and Board, and joins a growing staff of nine, plus a strong team of regular contributors, contractors, and partners.

This is a great opportunity for someone to keep building our institutional and major donor base— now at $1.45 million with a $2 million goal for 2026. They will shape and improve our revenue infrastructure, and oversee the continued development of our “reader revenue” and membership donation programs. We are also assessing the potential for corporate sponsorship, underwriting, and additional revenue streams while ensuring continued editorial independence.

LA Public Press is known for quickly converting philanthropic investment into resonant journalism published through accessible media that reaches local communities in Los Angeles. We focus particularly on issues like housing, homelessness, environmental justice and pollution, policing and the justice system, local government, and community mutual-aid.

With the backing of institutional philanthropy and committed philanthropists, LA Public Press is expanding and hiring for multiple open positions. Many of the business and financial operations remain the Publisher’s sole responsibility. Expanding business-side organizational capacity — particularly around revenue and strategic planning — is the primary purpose of this role.

This job is an opportunity to help lead a mission-driven nonprofit newsroom to maturity at an integral moment for local news in Los Angeles, the largest county in the United States. This position will report to the Publisher and share leadership in shaping LA Public Press’ business, revenue and strategy.

The best person for this job has experience in growing nonprofits’ business and revenue, including membership revenue, major donor cultivation, and bigger-picture board and governance development to support growth.

About this job

● LA Public Press is a hybrid work environment. We will continue to accommodate remote work within Los Angeles County, with some in-person work once the company moves into a Wilshire Center office space in spring 2025.
● The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $105,000 annually.
● 100% company-covered health insurance (HMO and PPO), a 4% retirement match, FSA and DCFSA options. Three/four months paid leave for non-birthing/birthing parents.
● 12 days paid sick leave.

● Three-weeks paid vacation time at onset, with guaranteed increases in subsequent years of employment. 13 paid holidays. LA Public Press also observes a two-week end-of-year office close period.

● LA Public Press is an equal-opportunity employer, and encourages people of all identity and ability characteristics to apply. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as required.

Roles & responsibilities

● Ensure LA Public Press is regularly engaging with its network of institutional and individual major donors. This will include securing renewals, increasing giving amounts, and organizing donors broadly to support local journalism. You can expect to work in close partnership with the Publisher in this work.
● Expand and refine our existing small-dollar membership program. For example, develop and coordinate ‘leadership’ tier incentives (including events), and steward the development of a unified CRM for all individual donors.
● Contribute to the strategic planning process as our publication evolves.
● Work with our Publisher to refine, streamline, and document revenue operations. Although this is primarily a fundraising position, managing and improving revenue systems as we grow is expected to make up perhaps 25-30% of the job.
● Support and partner with the Publisher as the company recruits and expands its governing board.

Qualifications

● 5+ years working in a nonprofit development/revenue role and preferably two years managing or leading development work. This director role is currently an individual contributor role, but is expected to quickly grow into one managing a staff and contract revenue team.

● You have raised significant sums of money for nonprofits and can point to five and six- figure commitments with your fingerprints.

● You have contributed to a strategic planning process, and can effectively coordinate between organizational stakeholders, including staff and board.
● You have managed and benchmarked a budget, are adept at projecting revenue models and goals, and executing your revenue plan.
● You produce effective donor-oriented messaging and materials at all levels, can write an LOI in your sleep, and are able to shepherd grantmaking from start to finish.
● Experience in news media is helpful, but it is not a requirement. Regardless, you should be deeply familiar with LA County’s culture of philanthropy, its institutional and individual players, and overall trends in the local nonprofit ecosystem.
