Founded in 1957, The Whole Child provides mental health services to at-risk children experiencing trauma and behavioral challenges; housing services to families experiencing or at the risk of homelessness; parenting education to prevent child abuse/neglect; and nutrition education to combat childhood obesity. Today, we provide our array of multidisciplinary services across 10 locations in LA County to 4,000+ families annually, 10,000+ people, including 5,000+ children. 78% of our clients are low to extremely low-income families with a single female head of household who is raising 2-3 children.

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Communications and Community Engagement is responsible for External and Internal communications and PR. Through partnership with executives and senior leaders across the organization, this individual will create and oversee the execution of a robust corporate communications strategy that will seek audience engagement at all levels and will position The Whole Child as a thought leader in its field. Externally, the Director will maximize TWC’s brand awareness among the public and targeted audiences through strategic marketing, social media, community engagement, and public relations initiatives. Internally, the Director will ensure proper brand usage, procurement of success stories from our clients, procurement of subject matter expert content from our leaders, and contribute to company culture by producing and distributing content that inspires and inform our incredible workforce.

The ideal candidate will be an expert writer and innovative marketing professional who has successfully led the development of a wide range of deliverables including social media efforts, digital assets, printed collateral, including importantly the production of Annual Impact reports, video projects, newsletters, targeted email campaigns, and organization representation at trade shows, conferences, and community events.

Roles & responsibilities

-Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic communications plan to cultivate an internal culture in line with TWC values.

-Partners with leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with external audiences (government funders, high-ranking corporate executives, media, donors, and elected officials) and internal influencers (leadership team, long-tenure employees, other team members holding influence on teams.)

-Creates and maintains an innovative and attractive suite of collateral assets to describe the organization’s history and impact. Current collateral assets include website, annual report, internal and external newsletters, social media accounts, presentation decks, one-pagers, swag, trade show set up materials.

-Develops and oversees execution of Social Media strategy.

-Monitors analytics across all digital marketing efforts to optimize performance.

-Oversees all PR efforts for special projects, such as capital projects, new services lines, or other materials that showcase TWC’s subject matter expertise in mental Health, Housing, Parenting, Nutrition Education, and child wellbeing overall.

-Ensures TWC’s visual and written communications are on brand.

-Manages all photo shoots and filming projects.

-In partnership with TWC’s Sr. Director of Development, creates comprehensive campaigns for annual fundraising event and giving campaigns.

-Leads the development of all presentations, speeches, talking points and press messages for leadership team.

-Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic marketing & communications plan to strengthen and advance TWC’s brand awareness.

-Serves as the lead writer and copyeditor for organization-wide materials and communications.

-Develops and fosters strong working relationships across the organization to achieve organization goals and priorities.

-Reports metrics and other requested marketing reports to leadership team.


-Minimum 8 years prior marketing, communications and/or public relations experience.

-Bachelor's degree in a related field, preferably Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, etc.

-Strong leadership qualities and experience managing a team; embraces collaboration within and across teams.

-Knowledge of current marketing and communication principles and strategies.

-Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment that requires strong multitasking, organization and time management skills and a self-starter mentality.

-Experience working with senior leadership and executive teams.

-Excellent written and oral communication skills.

-Experience communicating with high-profile individuals such as elected officials.

-Effective project management skills.

-Experience working with ad agencies and external vendors.

-A creative, out-of-the-box thinker.

-Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Photoshop.

-Strong understanding of Adobe creative platforms including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, and other design platforms such as Canva, is not required, but preferred.

-Strong understanding of website publishing platforms such as WordPress is not required, but preferred.

-A valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance (as required by the State of California) is required. EOE


Salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits package consisting of 100% paid medical insurance for the employee and contribution to dependent(s)’ insurance. Access to Dental and Vision Insurance. 401k contribution 100% match up to 4% of annual salary. Paid time off (PTO for vacation and sick time) starting at 20 days and 25 after 3 years, 13 paid holidays, and organization wide closure from Dec 23rd to Jan 1st. As for technology, there’s a cell phone stipend and work laptop provided.

The Director of Marketing and Communications will work Monday – Friday on a hybrid on-site/virtual model with up to two days work from home after the first three months. In order to build the rapport with the staff and key external stakeholders required for the success of this position, the Director will be required to be on-site full time during the first three months of tenure.
