School on Wheels volunteers provide free tutoring and mentoring to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade living in shelters, motels, vehicles, group foster homes, and the streets of Southern California.

About this job

This is a new role that will oversee management of their highly impactful regional teams, which includes their Skid Row Learning Center, and will coordinate with other senior leaders on program development, financial management, fund development, and strategic planning. This is a remote role with some regional travel requirements within Southern California.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about the organization’s mission and will have 7+ years of nonprofit leadership experience including operational, financial, and management responsibilities. Excellent management skills are required. Spanish fluency is a significant plus.

Roles & responsibilities

As a member of the Leadership Team, provide input to the Executive Director in the development of SOW’s strategic plans, policies and budgets.

Leadership Team

● Work with Executive Director to ensure the organization’s ability to successfully fulfill its mission into the future.

● Interact with and guide functional leadership team to achieve SOW’s strategic plan and goals.

● Provide guidance to the Executive Director to ensure that SOW’s policies, procedures and activities are

congruent with its mission and vision.

● Work with Leadership Team to build and lead staff to strengthen and support School on Wheels’

programmatic, financial, funding, and operational goals.

● Act as Executive Director in their absence, with assistance from the Executive Advisor.

Regional Management

● Work with the Executive Director and Associate Director, Student, Volunteer, Parents to manage all regional teams geographically assigned in six counties in Southern California.

● Establish annual goals and objectives based on the strategic plan: set the tone and motivation to achieve those goals, evaluate results and performance and hold teams accountable for those achievements.

● Manage Associate Director, SVP overseeing all SOW regional, volunteer and student coordinators, and ensure the Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) remains a vibrant learning environment and facility suitable for foundation and funder site visits.

● Manage the Regional Manager, Volunteer Engagement & Corporate Partnerships developing and sustaining corporate and non-profit partnerships that enhance volunteer recruitment efforts. The Regional Manager will educate various stakeholders about the many meaningful ways to support the work of SOW and make a positive impact in the communities we serve.

Financial Management

● Work with Chief Administrative Officer to manage budgeting and financial reporting.

● Assist in compiling the organizational functional budget, employ strategies to safeguard assets, and

ensure appropriate cash flow.

● Monitor monthly financial reports (P&L; Balance Sheet; Operating Expense; Revenue/Donor), including payroll, accounts payables and receivables.

● Work with CAO and external auditor to finalize year-end financial statement and tax returns.

Fund Development

● Work with the Executive Advisor and the Chief Development Officer to ensure adequate funding is in place to meet School on Wheels' mission, programs and organizational goals.

● Assist in helping enhance our marketing and branding opportunities.

Program Management

● Work with Chief Program Officer to ensure the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and plans that reflect organizational and program priorities.

● Coordinate with Chief Program Officer to ensure programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent program quality.

People Management

● In coordination with the Executive Director and Leadership Team, promote a culture that reflects School on Wheels’ values and create a positive work environment designed to attract, retain and motivate a diverse, talented staff.

● Coordinate, update and improve the Career Path Program to encourage continuous learning and development.

● Work with the Executive Director to ensure smooth day-to-day operations through the Leadership Team and management staff.

● Establish credibility throughout the organization to be an effective listener and problem solver of people issues.

Qualifications

● Strong belief in the mission and culture of School on Wheels. Interest in working for a mission-driven nonprofit organization and exemplifying SOW’s values, integrity and ethics.

● Substantial business and operational management experience in evaluating, developing and implementing organizational policies, systems and structures.

● Significant background in planning, analysis and budgeting, superb business acumen and sound understanding of business and funding strategies.

● Successful track record in staff development, coaching and mentoring.

● Ability to inspire teams and work effectively with people of all levels in the organization.

● Accustomed to prioritizing, executing, and achieving results in lean environments; always ready to

engage and lend a hand where needed.

● Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) skills a definite plus.

● Strong program or project management experience.
