Since 1993, we have provided tutoring to over 50,000 students across six counties in Southern California and partnered with 400+ sites, including shelters and school districts. Each year, we supply around 5,000 students with school supplies, striving to bridge educational gaps and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Reporting to the Chief Regional Officer, this position is responsible for leading the operations and programming of School on Wheels’ Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) in downtown Los Angeles to meet our goals of serving the most vulnerable students with high-quality education support. This full-time managerial role ensures that all SRLC activities are delivered consistently with the highest attention to student outcomes. This includes assigning, delegating, and ensuring team members and volunteers complete responsibilities; coaching, mentoring, and training staff and volunteers; program development and program evaluation; and operation and facilities management.

Roles & responsibilities
- Oversee all operations of the SRLC programming, including weekday after-school programs and school breaks such as summer programming.
- Develop and launch a tutoring program for students unable to attend the SRLC during programming hours, including evening programming at the Union Rescue Mission and Saturday programming at the SRLC.
- Ensure all SRLC students are receiving appropriate curriculum and ongoing assessments; implement new curriculum as needed.
- Oversee data collection and reporting for all SRLC activities.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to enhance SRLC program quality, safety, and efficiency.
- Coach, mentor, and evaluate SRLC staff, interns, and volunteers in planning and implementing staff goals and objectives, establishing priorities, monitoring their progress, and ensuring team effectiveness and success in achieving them.
- Manage a robust internship program that includes developing and maintaining partnerships with colleges and universities, ensuring adherence to internship program policies, and supervising on-site interns.
- Maintain and grow positive relationships with program partners, including shelters, schools, internship partner sites, social service providers, and others.
- Provide fundraising support, including managing donations of supplies and providing tours and presentations of SRLC to media, donors, partners, and other invited guests.
- Ensure physical SRLC facilities remain a safe, clean, and vibrant learning environment and suitable for staff, students, and foundation and funder site visits.
- Develop and implement strategies for volunteer recruitment, training, and retention.
- Develop and implement strategies for student recruitment and parent engagement; sensitively address student behavior and parent feedback.
- Act as lead for safety-related calls to LAPD, LAFD, BID, and/or DCFS, and maintain SRLC emergency protocols and injury/illness prevention plans.
- Serve as a backup instructor to SRLC Program Development Coordinators as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
- A minimum of five years experience working in classroom or afterschool program management and/or leading programs for at-risk children.
- Cultural sensitivity, empathy, and understanding of the dynamics of families and children experiencing homelessness and immigrant communities.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed education/care and comfort working with the Skid Row community.
- Ability to listen and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people –excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Experience in volunteer recruitment, retention, and management preferred.
- Ability to establish deadlines, goals, and objectives for direct reports and to hold them accountable for results.
- Excellent computer skills, including the use of Google Docs., Salesforce, Microsoft Office, and Internet applications.
- A commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Ability to represent SOW in the highest manner and exemplify SOW’s values, integrity, and ethics.
- Successful completion of a Livescan background check.
