Kid City’s college access and persistence, career readiness, and music programs are culturally responsive to the holistic needs of young people and embrace each of their unique voices and experiences. Career readiness activities include: resume and interview workshops, career exploration, internship/job search assistance, and internship opportunities.

About this job

The Kid City Executive Director is responsible for the long-term strategy, focus, and vision of Kid City. The Executive Director oversees Kid City programs, fundraising, partnerships, and communications. The Executive Director’s core responsibilities are developing Kid City’s fundraising capacity and supervising Kid City staff in alignment with Kid City’s values and purpose. The Executive Director also builds a budget, monitors income and expenses, and provides all necessary financial information to the bookkeeper and auditor. The ideal candidate demonstrates profound commitment to Kid City’s values of radical welcome, student-centered responsive programs, and racial and economic equity.

Roles & responsibilities

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Executive Director leads Kid City’s development. They are responsible for actualizing the vision and values articulated with Kid City’s staff and Advisory Board. Duties, responsibilities and activities are not limited to, but include:

- Modeling and promoting Urban Foundation and Kid City values.

- Creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for staff, participants, volunteers, and visitors.

- Upholding primary responsibility for Kid City’s fundraising efforts and raising the revenue necessary to balance Kid City’s budget.

- Engaging Kid City’s community of program supporters, funders, donors, volunteers, parents, alumni, and participants to build their ownership and engagement with the organization.

- Representing Kid City professionally; articulating program philosophy, mission, values to external stakeholders and partners.

- Serving as a role model and guide for participants of all ages, including students in college.

- Engaging with students in the Kid City space, and on occasion, attending student extracurricular events/performances.

Resource development

- Leading fundraising efforts and campaigns.

- Cultivating and maintaining relationships with major funders and donors through invitations to special events, program events, and individual visits and conversations.

- With support from the Development Manager and event committee, preparing a successful annual fundraising event.

- Overseeing grant proposals and reports. Providing vision and support to the Development Manager to ensure grant proposals and reports to current funders reflect the quality necessary to fund Kid City’s programs.

- Identifying and securing new funders and funding streams that match Kid City’s programs and needs.

- Managing and growing the capacity of Kid City’s other current sources of support, including campaigns, sales, raffles, and peer-to-peer fundraising.

Communications

- The Executive Director will oversee all communications for Kid City.

- Establishing communications standards for internal- and external-facing communications.

- Coordinating and scheduling external-facing communications with Development Manager, volunteers, interns, and consultants.

- Providing vision and approval for website maintenance and development, quarterly newsletters, annual event campaigns, and more.

- In cooperation with the Development Manager, ensuring Kid City representation in coalitions and networks, including working with partners to advocate for education equity at the local, state, and federal levels.

Program development and oversight

- Advancing program vision and development.

- Quarterly planning with Kid City staff.

- Maintaining daily communication with Kid City program staff to ensure smooth program development and delivery.

- Weekly meetings with Kid City staff to review goals, execute and evaluate Kid City programs, and build team rapport.

- Conducting weekly leadership meetings with the Development Manager.

- Advising on short and long-term calendar of program activities in alignment with mission, values, goals and objectives. Ensuring that adequate support is available for staff to effectively take on any new or suggested programs and events.

Human Resources

- Hiring, onboarding, training, and supervising Development Manager and program staff.

- Developing strategies for staff recruitment and retention; enabling Kid City’s staff of young professionals to advance to the next stage of their careers while maintaining staffing levels and stability for Kid City.

- Setting performance standards and goals; conducting regular performance evaluations.

- Addressing performance issues and employee conflicts.

- Ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations.

- Consulting with Kid City’s Human Resources Consultant as necessary.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS (preferred):

This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A Master’s degree is a plus, but not required.

Five years experience in a community-based organization as program manager or program director.

Demonstrated fundraising expertise with foundations, public funders, donors, and other sources of support. Interest in expanding sources of support for Kid City.

Profound commitment to ensuring access to higher education for low-income and first generation students; knowledge of college admissions, college preparation, enrollment, and persistence.

Strong commitment to improving healthy lifestyles, college and job readiness of urban youth.

Deep understanding of issues of racial, economic, and education equity; ability to have uncomfortable conversations around these issues, and to promote equity in the workplace as well as in the program.

Ability to work respectfully in collaboration with youth and young adults of diverse race, family backgrounds, and income levels.

Demonstrated ability to provide meaningful professional and program development to staff, interns, and fellows, including young, entry-level professionals.

Understanding of and ability to put into practice Kid City’s mission and values, including radical welcome, adaptive leadership, and community care.

Ability to work creatively within tight budget constraints while achieving program objectives.

Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English (required) and Spanish (preferred) are essential.

Ability to form coalitions and partnerships to further Kid City mission and increase capacity.

Working knowledge of Google suite platforms, especially Calendar, Gmail, team drives, Google Hangouts, contacts, and groups; ability to manage email and other communication efficiently and effectively.

QUALIFICATIONS (desired):

Connections to funders and willingness to introduce Kid City to likely funders.

Previous experience in a community-based college access or youth development program, working specifically with low-income and first generation college students.

Training, education, or experience in addressing mental health issues in youth and young adults.

Experience in using Salesforce as a student or participant management system.
