diverse network of partners across LA County, LA Compost co-creates spaces for local
compost access and engagement, restorative practices, and community empowerment. LA
Compost supports a healthy transition where food is never wasted but returned to the soil for
the next cycle of life.
For over a decade, LA Compost has created and facilitated community composting
throughout Los Angeles County. LA Compost provides services in the areas of education and
empowerment, community compost access, and parks and policy.
About this job
The Executive Director of LA Compost is responsible for the overall success and growth of the
organization and must be a collaborative visionary with a proven track record in leadership
and management. The Executive Director will work alongside a diverse staff to facilitate and
support fundraising strategies, direct communication and outreach, and guide policy for LA
Compost programs. The Executive Director reports to a highly experienced and committed
Board of Directors and is responsible for ensuring ethical operations, leadership, and
transparency.
Roles & responsibilities
Partnerships and Development:
Cultivate new and maintain existing relationships with key stakeholders and
community-based partners. Including but not limited to State officials, City Councils,
neighborhood councils, municipalities, donors, and vendors.
Work alongside the Board of Directors and staff to implement development and
communication strategies to meet annual financial and communication goals.
Identify new strategic community-based partnerships to collaborate with and support
LA Compost’s rapidly growing programmatic offerings.
Resource Management and Financial Oversight:
Strategically communicate LA Compost’s mission, vision, programmatic offerings, and
funding needs to partners, Board members, and prospective funders.
Work closely with the Development Team and Board of Directors to implement the
annual development plan.
Develop an annual organizational budget in partnership with senior leadership and
Board Chair for approval by the Board of Directors.
In partnership with the Development Team and Board of Directors, lead conversations
with funders, oversee grant applications and associated grant reporting, and conduct
site visits and tours.
Upload, classify, and reimburse all monthly expenses in partnership with the Senior
Operations Manager.
Execute contracts, oversee banking functions and cash management.
Approve payroll for staff and finalize payroll reports with the accountant.
Program Operations and Staff Oversight:
Provide direct support to seven (7) LA Compost Managers, providing support with
individual work plans, mid-year, and annual performance reviews.
Work with seven LA Compost Managers to improve standard operating procedures
across program offerings.
Work with Human Resources Advisor to update the employee handbook on an
as-needed basis.
Improve and maintain metrics tracking library for qualitative and quantitative metrics
across all program offerings.
Support program evaluation efforts to ensure program offerings meet or exceed
strategic plan goals.
Vision and Leadership
Work alongside the Board of Directors to develop and implement an intentional
strategy that moves the organization forward and increases overall positive impact.
Hire, onboard, and train manager-level staff to create a dynamic team focused on
carrying out the mission, vision, and values of LA Compost.
Provide visionary direction for LA Compost to remain an industry leader for the next
decade.
Establish a culture of care across the LA Compost team, supporting healthy
interactions between staff and community members.
Additional Responsibilities
Maintain LA Compost’s standing as a 501(c)3 nonprofit via timely submission of
annual nonprofit compliance paperwork (Annual 990, RRF-1 Form, CA Franchise Tax
Board).
Maintain proper insurance coverage by working directly with Insurance Brokers to
comply with various contracts and right-of-entry agreements.
Work directly with the accountant to cross-check monthly financial statements.
Support the Operations Team to ensure infrastructure and vehicle maintenance is
performed on time.
Visit various LA Compost hubs and farmers market sites to provide support or
coverage when needed.
Engage with various state and national community composting networks.
Work directly with the Human Resources Advisor and Board of Directors to support
conflict resolution.
Perform other tasks and duties to successfully function as Executive Director and
oversee LA Compost operations.
Qualifications
Communication Skills:
Strong public speaking skills.
Experience managing internal team and external community
communications.
Experience cultivating and maintaining key relationships with network
partners and stakeholders.
Fundraising and Development:
Experience leading fundraising efforts and establishing new systems and
strategies to meet annual fundraising goals.
Leadership Experience:
4+ years of experience in nonprofit leadership (or equivalent leadership role),
including managing staff and collaborating with a Board of Directors.
Strategy Implementation:
Experience developing and executing strategic plans alongside staff and Board
of Directors.
Preferred Skills:
Experience working with City, County, and Municipal agencies, urban
agriculture organizations, and educators.
