The Grants Manager is responsible for researching, preparing, submitting, and managing grant proposals/reports that support Agency goals and meet funder guidelines and criteria. This person will also manage and work collaboratively with our grant writer. This position requires strong writing, data analysis, program budgeting, and project management skills, with an emphasis on outcome measurement. Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Development, supports the Agency’s strategic initiatives through the management of government, corporate, and foundation grants as well as internal special projects.

Roles & responsibilities

  • Manages agency corporate, foundation and government grants portfolio.
  • Vets grant and funding opportunities for the agency while providing synopses to key agency stakeholders on funding eligibility, target areas, and recommendations on perusal.
  • Writes and submits competitive, concise, and persuasive proposals and progress reports, and works collaboratively with other departments to ensure accuracy of content.
  • Leads the preparation and accurate development of grant budgets in partnership with finance and program staff.
  • Coordinates and leads grant award implementation meetings and monthly review meetings to assess progress on active grant projects and make necessary adjustments when needed.
  • Works with the Executive Team to assess and set funding priorities, and provides regular updates on progress toward goals.
  • Develops an Annual Grant/Foundation plan and timeline; meets regularly with the Senior Director of Development to re-assess and revise priorities/plan (as new or emergent needs arise).
  • Prepares monthly management reports outlining funding outreach and progress toward Grant/Foundation goals.
  • Stays updated on development needs of the organization and tracks trends in the world of philanthropy and grant-writing
  • Supports special projects and events, including the preparation of written materials, as needed.
  • Provides briefings and pitch ideas to CEO, Vice President of Development, and/or Senior Director of Development before meetings with foundation and community partners.
  • Supervises grant writer.


  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or other related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in grants management.
  • Experience with preparing and managing budgets
  • Advanced knowledge of general development practices in a nonprofit environment, preferably including experience in an organization providing direct human services.
  • Advanced knowledge of the competitive grant funding process, as demonstrated by experience with identifying and writing successful private and government grant proposals.
  • Very effective oral and written communication skills; superior writing skills including editing for content, style and grammar.
  • A working knowledge of how to develop long-term relationships with foundations and representatives of companies that might provide support.
  • Strong personal computer skills including preparation of spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software. Experience with grant tracking software is preferred.
  • Very strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing demands as they arise.
  • Open to feedback on technical and stylistic writing skills.
  • A commitment to team objectives and Didi Hirsch philosophies.
  • Interest and knowledge of the communities of Los Angeles.
  • Current California driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier.
