Crisis Support Counselors are critical to the success of the CCP grant, which seeks to connect people with peers who can counsel them from a place of empathy, understanding, and hope for recovery. The crisis counseling role requires flexibility and the ability to work independently. The job involves balancing outreach, counseling, support groups, resource referral, and community risk assessments based on the needs of the community and the requirements of the grant. You will engage in time-limited, culturally proficient, non-clinical emotional and crisis support sessions to affected populations; individuals and communities in recovering from the effects of natural and human-caused disasters by assisting survivors in understanding their current situation and reactions, mitigating stress, developing coping strategies, providing emotional support, and encouraging linkages with resources and longer-term supportive services, including but not limited to relevant Individual Crisis Counseling, Group Crisis Counseling, Brief Educational or Supportive Contact, Public Education, Assessment, Referral and Resource Linkage and Community Networking and Support. Leads support both help seekers and peer counselors, keeping their experiences top of mind.
Roles & responsibilities
Provide outreach in the county to individuals and families affected by natural and human-caused disasters, in particular the LA Fire by door to door flyering, tabling, locating and attending community events and survivor gathering spaces and collaborating with other organizations to provide person centered support.
Works with individuals, families, and groups to provide crisis counseling service. Services include outreach, emotional support, individual and group crisis counseling, public education, and referrals when needed, conducted in office. Assisting survivors in understanding their current situation and reactions, mitigating stress, developing coping strategies, providing emotional support, and encouraging linkages with resources and longer-term supportive services.
Connect with community members who are requesting Crisis Counseling services via the CCP Work in a culturally sensitive manner with individuals, families, and groups to provide emotional support, individual and group crisis counseling, public education, and referrals when needed.
Possess knowledge of local and statewide resources and assistance available to individuals and families impacted by natural and human-caused disasters by assisting survivors in understanding their current situation and reactions, mitigating stress, developing coping strategies, providing emotional support, and encouraging linkages with resources and longer-term supportive services.
Possess a basic understanding of natural and human-caused disasters and stay updated with the latest FEMA and STATE guidelines.
Establish trust with help seekers and identify resources that would benefit their situation.
Provide counseling to help seekers, promote resilience and successful coping techniques, and explore the Help seeker’s mental and emotional state-of-mind through active, comforting, positive, and problem-solving language.
Use the designated digital applications to collect and enter CCP (Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program) service data in an accurate and timely manner.
