Food Forward rescues fresh, local produce that would otherwise go to waste, connecting this abundance with people in need, and inspiring others to do the same. This food helps feed Southern California’s most vulnerable: children, homeless individuals, veterans, those with HIV/AIDS, women, low-income families, immigrants, or anyone who does not have access to a sufficient quantity of food. We also aim to tap into an awareness and consciousness of sustainability and community building, and to become a bright voice on Southern California’s edible landscape around food security
and food justice issues.

The Operations Director is a Senior Management position at Food Forward. The ideal candidate will be able to wear multiple hats, allowing him/her to provide leadership oversight and management of Food Forward’s Accounting, Human Resources, IT and Facilities departments. The position will oversee these back office functions to support the day-to-day operations and logistics for all of Food Forward, in each of the geographies in which Food Forward operates in (i.e. currently Los Angeles and Ventura counties with distribution across 8 Southern California counties).

He/She will set an example for staff of high efficiency, top-tier professionalism, and extreme attention to detail. He/She will participate in and create, along with the Executive Director and other members of the senior management team, strategic plans for current activities, projected growth, organizational and logistical development opportunities for the organization, and enhanced produce rescue and distribution, helping Food Forward reach new audiences and consumers with increased efficiency.

The Operations Director will be highly organized and mission-focused, helping to build and grow Food Forwards back office systems, work flows and processes ensuring that they are anticipatory of and help drive, organizational accountability, compliance and growth. As the head of the Human Resources department, he/she along with the Executive Director, will help set the organizational culture for how Food Forward employees interact with each other and the various communities that we touch.

The ideal Candidate will be passionate about food access, hunger relief, eradicating food waste and community building. He/She will be an outside-the-box thinker, of high energy, a strong mentor, stay calm and collected in an extremely fast-paced environment. He/she must be able to prioritize projects and tasks appropriately and effectively while meeting important deadlines. He/She will work across various departments simultaneously providing guidance and support from the high level to the granular as necessary.


  • Manage all accounting functions insuring GAAP compliance, timeliness and accuracy
  • Lead the budgeting process across the full Food Forward organization
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures as well as analyzing historical data and current trends
  • Lead the annual audit & IRS 990 process to insure that financials are filed ahead of Federal deadlines

Human Resources

  • Manage HR strategic and operational plans, programs and processes; including:
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Guiding our management teams in HR matters
  • Partnering with management in all aspects of the employee lifecycle including attracting, hiring, orientation, developmental growth, and
  • termination of employees
  • Risk Management
  • Employee relations

Maintain, update, create as needed, and ensure implementation of HR Policies for the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization

Information Technology

  • Responsible for planning, creating and managing Food Forwards IT infrastructure
  • Lead the development of our proprietary software, including the engagement of developers and other contractors
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain the integrity of Food Forward’s databases

General & Agency Relations Operations

  • Provide direct support to staff in creating goals, budgets, timelines, daily tasks, work flows, logistics, day-to-day problem solving and planning and executing long-term projects
  • Manage Agency Relations program, insuring sustained, steady growth
  • Maintain regular training, personal development, mission inspiration, and team building activities for the staff
  • Participate in cross-functional teams and projects in various areas of the organization as needed
  • Manage staff overseeing multiple offices, insuring that facilities are as efficient, clean and streamlined as possible
  • Manage fleet for optimal life span. Forecast long term fleet needs, and insure compliance with all applicable laws and best practices
  • Represent Food Forward at community, anti-hunger, policy and networking events as an effective public speaker
  • Ability to lift and move boxes/objects up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, squat, turn body, sit and walk
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience leading distribution center operations. Operations experience working within the food supply chain or
  • emergency food system preferred
  • 5 + years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years hands-on non-profit leadership, management, team-building and strategic planning experience
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience with a successful history leading complex programs and projects, with million dollar-plus budgets, subject to government, regulatory, corporate or foundation requirements, resulting in positive change or transformation of community stakeholders, internal and external customers
  • 3–5 year managing IT Operations and leading software/database development projects
  • 3 + years of human resource and recruiting experience
  • Experience working with and a passion for serving diverse/underserved communities
  • Strong critical-thinking skills, including complex logistics and ability to resolve problems of a confidential and sensitive nature that require quantitative analysis
  • Strong interest and passion for building scalable solutions to fighting hunger and food waste through innovative IT, programmatic and process solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with demonstrated ability to present and interact effectively with all levels of an organization, from intern through Board of Directors and in public speaking engagements.
  • Strong knowledge of Quickbooks
  • In-depth experience with Macs, Google Docs and Microsoft Office technology
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, love of “start-up” environment and a passion to roll up your sleeves to get the job done
  • Able to work well under pressure, as both an individual contributor and as part of team
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • California drivers license and clean DMV record
  • Ability to work some weekends as needed
