POSITION: Parent Organizer for Educational Equity
LOCATION: Partnership for Los Angeles Schools in South LA, Watts, or Boyle Heights
REPORTS TO: Manager of Parent Advocacy

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools is one of the largest, in-district public school transformation organizations in the United States. Our mission is to transform schools and revolutionize school systems to empower all students with a high quality education. We are a non-profit managing 18 LA Unified Schools serving approximately 14,500 students in Boyle Heights, South LA, and Watts. The Partnership promotes change through an innovative transformation model that relies on sustainable and scalable solutions that can be applied at schools beyond our 18 campuses to dramatically improve outcomes for all students.

OPPORTUNITY:
The Partnership is seeking a part-time community organizer to develop relationship-based, grassroots leadership and parent power in the Los Angeles Unified school communities of Watts, South LA, and Boyle Heights. The ideal candidate will have: experience and training in community organizing; successfully executed campaigns aimed for policy change; excellent verbal communication and relationship-building skills; emotional intelligence; cultural responsiveness; and a willingness to adapt, learn, and support the growth of others. The Partnership, alongside parent leaders, have worked on local systemic issues, including but not limited to: equitable distribution of school funding and school safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and develop parent leaders from school-sites into a monthly community-based leadership & organizing training program
  • Develop and facilitate monthly leadership training to parents on effective community organizing strategies (i.e., research meetings, one-to-ones, issue education)
  • Engage and inspire parent leaders in collective action for local or state level policy change, helping them identify issues, train leaders, and build strategic partnerships with decision makers and public officials
  • Assist the organization in establishing, sustaining, and executing an organizing vision in school communities
  • Conduct one-on-one visits with parent leaders and key stakeholders on a consistent and frequent basis
  • Participate in administrative activities as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years in professional experience in community organizing, policy, advocacy, community development, nonprofit, parent engagement, or social change environment
  • Able to build effective relationships across lines of difference and cultural competence to support the leadership of parents of color
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strategic thinking skills—able to design activities and trainings that inspire parents to act and influence decision makers
  • Able to effectively prioritize, set goals, execute plans, problem-solve
  • Group facilitation skills—able to present information and engage audiences in learning
  • Access to a car for work purposes; able and willing to accommodate evening and weekend work
  • Able to work independently and in a team
  • Open to challenge and desire to learn and engage in thought partnership Strong interpersonal and relational skills and love of people
  • Strong belief in the Partnership’s mission, core values, and social change
     

Preferred:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Familiarity with Los Angeles politics, communities, and education landscape
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
     

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a part-time, hourly position. Parent organizers work a seasonal school-year scheduled between August and May only. This position is not eligible for benefits.
