DATA SCIENCE INTERN

(STUDENT PROFESSIONAL WORKER)

SALARY $16.40 PER HOUR

The Port of Los Angeles is seeking a dedicated Data Science Intern. Ideal candidates have an interest in building data pipelines and prototypes for the nation’s busiest port and supporting development of predictive modeling. Do you dig stuff like this? This internship is 20 hours per week, ideally in conjunction with a research or capstone project at your university. The internship will end once the data project is complete and no longer than one year after the start date.

DUTIES

  • Develop and optimize ETL processes by working closely with multiple data partners and stakeholders across the port to gain access to a variety of systems
  • Prototype initial data pipeline for key datasets
  • Develop basic, automated analytics, design and implement insightful reports
  • Support rollout of ESRI toolset for maps and geospatial work
  • Prototype predictive models to help aid port operations
  • The internship will be partially tailored to your skill set, so don’t worry if you don’t have all of the preferred skills listed below.
     

SKILLS PREFERRED

  • Experience with programming language, version control, and Python + Github workflow. Understanding a scripting or statistical language like R, Javascript, Julia or others. You don’t need to be an expert.
  • Airflow or other open source ETL toolkits
  • Curiosity about operations of America’s largest port
  • Make and automate charts and analytics
  • Basic understanding of predictive modeling


REQUIREMENTS

Interns must be seniors or graduate students enrolled in an accredited college or university. Undergraduate student employees must complete a minimum of nine semester units or 12 quarter units and earn a minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA). Graduate students must complete a minimum of six semester or eight quarter units and earn a minimum 3.0 GPA.
