L.A. Works: L.A. Works is a 501(c)3 nonprot volunteer action center that creates and implements hands-on community service projects throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Founded in 1991, L.A. Works addresses three principal needs: to increase volunteer participation in the community; to build the capacity of nonprot organizations to achieve their missions through access to volunteer labor and other resources, and to educate and encourage people to engage in the broader social issues aecting the greater Los Angeles community.

Position Overview: Muralists are an important member of our Corporate Engagement Program team and work directly with Special Event Coordinators (SEC). The Corporate Engagement team organizes one-day service events for volunteer group sizes ranging from 40-2000. Working with the SEC, the muralist is responsible for delivering quality designs to our community partners throughout L.A. County. L.A. Works is an equal opportunity employer.

Responsibilities: Based on the direction of the community partner, translate their vision into an illustrated mock-up that will be submitted to school principals or nonprot partner for review and approval. When necessary, incorporate their feedback to create a second version for approval.
Ability to create themed designs in any of the following genres: lettering and signage, fantasy, sci-, signage, sports, environmental, college prep, abstract patterns, health and wellness, landscape or other.

  • Ability to conceptualize a design that is accessible to non-creative painting volunteers.
  • Sketch approved design on surfaces ranging from exterior walls, interior walls/ hallways, blacktops, handball courts or classroom walls the week of the event.
  • Preferably be on site for event day to co-lead volunteer groups with art direction, when needed freestyle additional designs and clean up murals with aerosol. Estimated hours during event day average 6-8 hours. Submit invoice and any material receipts within a week of the event.

Key Requirements:

  • Reliable and dependable
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate eectively with community partners such as school principals, teachers, youth and nonprot workers.
  • Must have previous community art experience conceptualizing and executing murals and/or street art.
  • Experience working with volunteers or art instruction experience preferred.

Hours and Compensation:

This is a contracted project-based position. Compensation is based on the number of conceptualized designs, the number of surface areas and event day availability. Depending on event size, the fee ranges from $300 - $1500+.


Project sites are public schools and community-based nonprots located throughout LA County (San Fernando Valley, NELA, Mid-City, South LA, SouthBay, EastLA, Downtown LA).
