We seek a data enthusiast/IT generalist/transportation geek to serve the Data and Systems Manager for a passionate group of professors, staff, and students dedicated to cutting-edge research and education on cities and transportation. The UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies is a community of scholars studying transportation finance, public transit, and innovative mobility. We work across the UCLA campus to coordinate, conduct, and promote research that produces real results for California and around the globe.
The Data and Systems Manager will support research projects and programs in addition to our core operations.
The Data and Systems Manager will lead multi-year technology-based research and education projects like REVISION, a regional sustainability metrics visualization application, the Southern California Bike Data Clearinghouse, and the Regional Data Portal. The Data and Systems manager will also support short-term research projects, working with faculty and staff researchers to develop and implement plans to intelligently incorporate technology to improve research and educational outcomes.
The Data and Systems manager will help us take our computationally-intensive research projects to the next level, guiding us in the use of scalable cloud computing resources such as AWS or UCLA’s Hoffman2 Cluster. (We’re tired of 10-hour model runs.)
The Data and Systems Manager is also the information technology lead for the organization. The Data and Systems Manager will use Zapier to integrate our cloud-based support systems (Asana, MailChimp, Google Sheets, Gmail, Eventbrite) in a way that has us all working smarter, not harder. The Data and Systems Manager is also responsible for the systems that run our family of websites (Institute of Transportation Studies, Lewis Center, Arrowhead Symposium, TransitWiki.org, AccessMagazine.org).
The ideal candidate possesses basic scripting skills and has a demonstrated ability to keep abreast of best practices and latest advances in technology and approaches. The position is a good stepping stone for a tech-adept data enthusiast who wants to hone their smart cities and transportation research skills at an entrepreneurial, public mission-driven organization and doesn’t mind pitching in with general IT tasks.
Our academic projects timelines aren’t as crunched as at startups, so this is also a good place for someone with mid-level city and transportation experience interested in learning big/open/smart city and transportation data approaches on the job, provided that they apply with a demonstrated ability to self-teach relevant technical skills. For such candidates, submission of your MOOC data science, computer science, and programming course or program certificates is strongly encouraged.
The Data and Systems Manager will be assisted by undergraduate and graduate students who they recruit, manage, and delegate tasks.
