LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes serves the public by providing educational experiences through public programming and exhibitions that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Mexicans, Mexican Americans and all Latinos in Southern California. LA Plaza opened to the public in 2011 in two renovated buildings located in the downtown Los Angeles historic core. Established by the County of Los Angeles, LA Plaza operates as a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors and is partially funded through the County’s cultural arts program. Position Summary:

The Deputy Director works side-by-side with the CEO in overseeing administrative, operational and financial aspects of the organization. The position has lead responsibility for overseeing financial operations, including payables and receivables, cash management, endowment funds, and contract and vendor relations. Additionally, the DD will work with the outside accounting firm and audit firm to assure that the organization operates in a financially sound manner and is in compliance with all government regulations. The position also has co-supervisorial oversight with the CEO of Administrative Office Manager; Director of Facilities, Technology and Security; Manager of Visitor Services/Store Operations. The position serves as a member of the senior staff team and has direct and frequent interaction with the board of trustees.

Major Responsibilities:

Financial Duties:

The Deputy Director will provide overall direction and leadership of LA Plaza’s financial operations, which include budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, insurance activities, information technology, and certain administrative functions for the organization. The role will direct and control the organization’s overall financial plans, policies along with its accounting practices and the conduct of 2 its relationship with lending institutions. The position establishes financial reporting systems with controls and standards to safeguard company assets. The position will be a trusted and valued professional partner to the CEO and Board of Directors, and will be a key member of the executive management team. The Deputy Director will ensure that the financial dimensions of LA Plaza’s strategic plans and operational activities are effectively implemented, and that results are monitored, objectives are attained, fiduciary responsibilities are upheld, and appropriately communicated.

Operational Duties:

  • Supervise the Director of Facilities, Technology and Security in assuring that the facility is properly and efficiently maintained.
  • Supervise the Manager of Visitor Services/Store Operations in assuring a positive guest experience and profitable gift store operation. 
  • Work closely with the CEO and Director of Development in assuring that the organization meets its fund-raising goals.

  • Experience: 5+ years in accounting, finance or business management, preferably in a non-profit setting
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; business or finance is preferred.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Technology Skills: Internet competency and strong computer proficiency, including mastery of the Microsoft Office software suite and a familiarity with database software, and a willingness and ability to learn appropriate database, spreadsheet and other computer programs.
  • Project Management Skills: Strong organizational and management skills with attention to detail. Proven track record of achieving budget targets.
  • Judgment and Discretion: Skill in determining matters of importance and information of use to the executive, exercising initiative in accomplishing any related tasks or referring the rest. Ability to refer, give, deny or ask for information in a tactful and friendly manner. Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Team Work & General Skills: Ability to work well independently and as a team member. Ability to take initiative, and follow tasks through to completion. Ability to work with a team toward LA Plaza’s goals, leveraging each team member's skill set. Strong ability to maintain the integrity of confidential information. Working Conditions:

  • Ability to travel and attend meetings, presentations and events outside the office.
  • May require weekends, extended work day, attendance at off-site events and/or meetings.



LA Plaza offers a competitive compensation package that includes:

  • Salary range: $75,000 - $100,000
