CASA of Los Angeles mobilizes community volunteers to advocate for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. The organization envisions a Los Angeles in which every child in the child welfare system has an advocate and the opportunity to thrive. CASA of Los Angeles is on a path over the next five years to expand services to children in LA County’s child welfare system so that it provides services to a meaningful number of the 30,000 children in the dependency court system every year.

Key to these efforts is growth in the number of volunteers trained each year, the number who stay active in a year, and in revenue raised from community partners and other donors.

Position Overview

Reports to – Chief Financial Officer

Under the direction of the CFO, the Accounting Specialist will be responsible for providing assistance in the areas of accounts payable and receivable and general ledger account reconciliations, as well as assisting in with the office operation, amongst other tasks.

From Monday – Friday, the Accounting Specialist will work from CASA’s Monterey Park office at Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court, 201 Centre Plaza Drive, Suite 1100, Monterey Park, CA 91754. Work is performed indoors in an office setting. Some weekend and evening work is required throughout the year as needed and at major events.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Take primary responsibility for much of the day-to-day accounting activity that includes accounts payable and receivable, and maintenance of the related subsidiary systems.
  • Collect, review, code and record invoices and other requests for payment, paying particular attention to capturing all of each month’s activity in the monthly closing process.
  • Prepare daily bank deposits, and reconcile with the daily cash log.
  • As part of month-end closing, reconcile donation activity from the donor system with the daily bank deposits and cash log. Review coding of cash and credit card receipts, and record in the general ledger. Record all accounts receivable as of the month end.
  • Perform other month-end closing activities, recording receipts and disbursements, accounts receivable and payable, payroll and benefits and other recurring journal entries.
  • Calculate and post allocations of expenses that are shared by more than one department or activity.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations; review and reconcile general ledger accounts with subsidiary ledgers, as well as other general ledger accounts as indicated. Run assigned reports.
  • Manage vendor relationships, including researching and establishing new accounts, soliciting competitive bids as needed, and researching and resolving internal and external payment inquiries.
  • Assist with general office management and administration as assigned.
  • Assist with employee benefits maintenance and administration as assigned.
  • Other as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of work experience in an accounting support role, or work experience equivalent
  • Excellent computer skills, specifically MS Office products (Excel, Word); highly proficient excel
  • Accounting basics, including AR/AP (bills, invoicing, payments, etc.)
  • Experience with accounting software
  • Payroll processing experience
  • Ability to thrive and work effectively independently and as a part of a team
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, the ability to prioritize and organize multiple projects, meet deadlines, problem-solve and multi-task
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

 

Preferred

  • Experience or interest in working for a non-profit organization.
