Alliance College-Ready Public Schools is the largest nonprofit charter school organization in Los Angeles, serving nearly 13,000 low-income scholars across 25 free public middle and high schools on 28 campuses. In our 14th school year, Alliance has a proven record of success: though our scholars come to Alliance on average four grade-levels behind in reading, 95% of Alliance graduates have been accepted to college—including 77% to a four-year university in 2017. ROLE SUMMARY
We believe that all of our students, including our most vulnerable, can achieve at a high level. The Director of Special Education is charged with ensuring that our schools are able to provide our students with disabilities with the supports they need to achieve their full potential. As a member of Alliance’s academic division, the Director of Special Education will report directly to the Vice President of Student Support and lead the Special Education work across Alliance schools. The ideal candidate will have experience as a teacher, school, and systems leader serving students with disabilities, and deep expertise in Special Education programming and services. The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced project manager with strong strategic thinking and communication skills, and a drive toward strong performance results.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strengthen Alliance’s approach to serving students with disabilities, including expansion of the continuum of services and quality of supports available
  • Oversee the quality of Special Education programming, trainings, and designated instructional services across the network as well as partnerships with related service providers
  • Provide consultation, support, and technical assistance to Area Superintendents, site principals, and other staff on all educational, program, and legal matters relating to students with disabilities
  • Ensure accurate and timely compliance to LAUSD, state, and federal regulations
  • Manage and develop the Alliance Home Office Special Education team
  • Collaborate with key Home Office teams to ensure aligned supports and services to schools
  • As needed, serve as the charter representative on legal and due process proceedings involving Special Education and external meetings related to Special Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least three (3) years of secondary teaching experience, preferably in high-need schools or with high- need populations
  • At least two (2) years of leadership and management experience at the school and district level supervising Special Education services
