Summer Nature Camp Science Instructor

The Arboretum Summer Nature Camp is an extraordinary program that offers nature adventure, the science behind gardening, and arts and crafts focused on nature and the outdoors. The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden is currently seeking a qualified, enthusiastic, creative educator that can bring the highest quality of commitment and caring to our campers. Instructors must enjoy teaching, being outdoors, and creating innovative, hands-on experiences for active and curious young minds. Below are the three areas that applicants must have a working knowledge of to be a possible fit.  Listed below are also necessary requirements that all applicants must fit to be considered.

Science – A strong science background is a must! The instructor must be able to design and implement a nature science program teaching campers ages 5-11 about ecology, the environment, and the animals and plants found here at The Arboretum. The instructor must also be able to lesson plan and teach these concepts through hands on, creative projects, games, scientific experiments, demonstrations, and nature hikes.

Gardening- Knowledge of seeds and plants is required! This will introduce campers to the world of gardening such as using sustainable materials and teaching how to be environmentally sustainable. Project-based learning is encouraged with daily, weekly, and camp-long projects. This instructor will keep inventory and use supplies creatively to prevent waste and to stay within budget.

Outdoor Activities – Experience creating and implementing games and activities for young children.  The instructor must be able to create fun activities, suitable for 5-11 year olds, which foster an appreciation of nature and the environment.  Games can be facilitated with age appropriate debriefing at the end to enhance the educational value.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Approach education with passion and excitement!
  • Responsible for leading groups of 15-20 kids throughout the day’s science and recreation activities with the help of 5-8 counselors and the Camp Director.
  • Lead class and recreation group rotation
  • Build positive group dynamics among our camp team
  • Interact with parents in a professional and energetic manner
  • Give positive reinforcement to campers
  • Help cultivate confidence and self-esteem, as well as a natural love for learning.
     

Requirements:

  • Love working with kids!
  • College Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Geology or related field or equivalent  science teaching experience
  • Must be 21 years old or older
  • Experience working with K-6th grade children
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Three or more years’ experience facilitating youth education in informal education or in the classroom
  • Responsible and dependable
  • A good role model with strong academic standing
  • Previous camp experience required
  • Contagious enthusiasm and charisma
  • Team player
     

Educators must be available for the entire 10 week program and for up to 40 hours prior to camp starting for lesson planning.  Actual camp sessions are Monday – Friday, June 5 – August 11th.  There will also be an instructor planning and orientation meeting prior to the beginning of camp; date TBD. Salary is: DOE.  40 hours per week are, 8:00-4:30 which includes a 30 minute mandatory lunch break.  Instructors are expected to create lesson plans and supply lists for each session and have them submitted by the required date.  Instructors are also required to submit updates to the camp blog twice a week.  All supplies are provided.  Prior to employment, all candidates will go through a background check including fingerprinting by LA County.
