Title: BSS Administrative Assistant Department: Coalitions and Alliances
Exempt Status: N Reports to: BSS Manager
Effective Date: Immediately

The Brothers, Sons, Selves (BSS) coalition is working to improve outcomes for boys and young men of color by advocating for positive alternatives to punitive school discipline and reducing criminalization in Los Angeles County and the State of California. Since 2010, BSS has fought to improve school climate, which means that fewer students of color are getting pushed into the school-to-prison pipeline.

Under the direction and guidance of the BSS Manager, the BSS Administrative Assistant will support the coalition’s administration and campaign logistics. In addition to administrative duties, this individual will play a critical role in assisting with internal and external communications and logistical aspects of events.


The administrative assistant will have a broad range of responsibilities:

  • Schedule and organize meetings, doing phone outreach as needed
  • Support meeting logistical needs
  • Attend pertinent BSS/community events
  • Update contacts and supporting project documentation


  • Serve as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders including BSS coalition members, youth leaders, civic and community leaders
  • Draft letters, documents, and correspondence on behalf of the BSS coalition
  • Draft social media posts on behalf of the BSS coalition

Research and Writing

  • Conduct internet and phone research on education/criminal justice issues related to BSS coalition priorities
  • Provide briefings to BSS Manager and BSS coalition members on progress of efforts across the county
  • All other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) or higher
  • 1 year of work experience in an educational or professional setting
  • Experience working in a fast‐paced environment

  • Ability to effectively communicate with varied audiences using multiple mediums, including social media
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work under pressure and perform tasks with limited direction
  • Great attention to detail
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong belief in the BSS’s mission, approach and core values, demonstrated by past involvement in the coalition and/or ability to articulate these elements
  • Strong work ethic


  • Deeply conscious and competent in ‘race’ politics.
  • Conscious of LGBTQIA+ issues and commitment to deepening understanding.
  • Conscious of gender identity issues and dynamics.
  • Past involvement with and/or knowledge of BSS campaigns is a plus.
  • Past community organizing experience is a plus.
  • Has past work/volunteer experience organizing in the educational and juvenile justice landscape.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk, read, write, and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
