About us:
Boyle Heights Beat is a youth-led community news project that serves an immigrant neighborhood of Los Angeles. It has been hailed as a model for youth development and civic engagement – by NBC, the Los Angeles Times, the Columbia Journalism Review and The New York Times. The Beat helps first generation students build skills that help them in school and in life. The tagline of the bilingual quarterly newspaper: “noticias por y para la comunidad” or “news by and for the community."

The Beat does double duty as a youth development program – training youth in research, interviewing, writing and critical thinking – and as an outlet that gives voice to an L.A. Latino community of close to 100,000. Its print edition is delivered to 28,000 doorsteps with 5,000 distributed in schools and churches.

Boyle Heights Beat is based at the University of Southern California - - in partnership with Hoy (LA Times Media Group).

Seeking:
We are seeking an experienced advancement strategic consultant, based in Los Angeles, to assist in the implementation of a strategic development plan. This is a contract position, up to 10 hours a week. The person in this position would work independently outside of our USC office. The work would involve helping to organize and participate in meetings and events across Los Angeles, including in the evenings.

Duties will include:

  • Building upon a fundraising strategy that includes working with corporate, individual, and foundation supporters
  • Production of regular progress updates and analytical reports
  • Assistance in creating and implementing a roadmap for a "give or get” board of directors
  • Identification of prospective funders, sponsors, supporters
  • Executing a cultivation strategy


Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and professional demeanor with demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive relationships with senior staff, board members and major donors.
  • Successful track record of advancement strategy and implementation work in the non-profit sector.
  • Knowledge of best practices in development and campaigns and ability to apply this knowledge to guide strategy.
