Description

The Luskin School of Public Affairs, at UCLA, offers graduate degrees in social welfare, public policy and urban planning. The school is driven by the motivation to develop solutions to society's most pressing problems. 

The Assistant Dean principally serves to extend the capacity of the Dean in accomplishing the central responsibilities of financial, managerial, programmatic and organizational leadership in the school. The Assistant Dean will provide support to the Dean to oversee operations and special projects and priorities including, but not limited to resource development, administration and management, communications and monitoring the strategic goals of the school. The Assistant Dean will provide leadership and manage the Office of the Dean to ensure high standards of excellence and responsiveness, operating with a high level of professionalism, accuracy, attention to detail, and integrity. The Assistant Dean will coordinate responsibilities of the Dean's Office with other offices across the school and the University and will act as a liaison with academic and administrative leaders and faculty groups including governance bodies. The Assistant Dean will research and analyze policy and operational issues, develop recommendations, draft routine and special communications and reports, and coordinate and implement policy decisions. The Assistant Dean will work with the Dean, and other department entities, to oversee searches, ensure quality faculty and student support services, represent the Dean on internal administrative matters, and will function as a point of contact with external constituencies. The Assistant Dean will also be asked to represent both the Dean and the School at University and community events. The Assistant Dean will recommend to the Dean annual and long-range spending plans for the school that support the mission of the university; work with the Dean and Chief Financial Officer on planning school expenditures. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and seven years progressive academic and/or administrative (preferably, a combination) experience required. Higher degree such as a masters or Ph.D. is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities, deadlines, and personalities and ability to foresee and resolve wide variety of problems. High level of initiative and flexibility, with the ability to integrate diverse opportunities and complex viewpoints into simple solutions.
  • Demonstrated exceptional oral communication skills; comfort with public speaking and ability to listen, learn and build trust among various constituencies.
  • Persuasive oral communication skills to lead meetings, explain complex ideas to diverse audiences, build consensus, and influence decision making by internal and external groups from all organizational levels.
  • Organizational ability to facilitate and coordinate planning efforts from conceptual through implementation phases.
  • Advance level of written skills to prepare materials ranging from professional correspondence to formal management reports using correct grammar and punctuation that is analytical, persuasive, if necessary, succinct, and with appropriate recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage various activities and programs with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate quality and impact of all programs.
  • Ability to work independently or as an active member of a team; work under pressure with competing interests, and maintain flexibility.
  • Ability and personality to cultivate relationships and work collaboratively and harmoniously with the Luskin Dean's Office, faculty, researchers, administrators, volunteers, staff, students and colleague's campus-wide.
  • Ability to provide a key leadership role, lead and manage personnel and work closely with other the Dean and his/her staff to achieve desired results.
  • Demonstrated ability in working with confidential and sensitive matters with tact and professionalism.
  • Excellent analytical, project management and delivery capabilities.
  • Flexibility to travel to out-of-town events and local government sites.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of executive education programs, management development and training, including competitive landscape.
